sharing a usb printer/scanner

I have 3 computers (#1 = win98) (#2 = win98) and (#3 = winxp).
I have a lexmark 5700 printer connected to #1 via a 1384 par.
All computers can print to that printer fine.
I have a lexmark x85 printer/scanner connected to #1 via usb.

When i attempt to print from other computers the software comes up but i recieve a error that states (problem communicating with printer) .

Lexmark could not solve the issue. if i connect the printer two the other comps they can print fine it is only accross the network that they cant.

You have to install the Lexmark printer as a network printer on each of the other computers. Then you print from the sending computer - also the Lexmark must have sharing authroized on the host computer.

I did that using the cd on each computer, when that didnt work i deleted and then let the add printer method and pulled the drivers from the computer directly attached to the printer.. .. it doesnt matter now. i got a refund and i am now looking for a nother printer..

Many printer/scanner combinations are not network compatible. My OfficeJet 700, for example, will not network. However, I can install it as a DeskJet 550c (which is what the printer part is) and it works just fine. Check with Lexmark and see if this is a possibility. Many times, then will say that "it is not a network printer, but we have heard a rumor that this will work".

try using the Z51,Z52 or Z53 drivers on the client machines... my guess is that it will do what you want.

You do need to keep the X85 drivers on the server directly connected to the x85

i did keep the drivers.. on the machine connected directly to the printer.. I took the x85 back and i am now shopping for a product that is designed for todays home user that has a network.. i am finished with lexmark.

My little story... I happended to be browsing at an Arron`s rental purchase and found a table in the back with Cannon 3010`s laying there by the pile... I knew the guy at the counter and he let me have 2 of them for $10... One had ink carts... The other just the print head... Anyhow they both worked fine (very nice and clear printing) so I put one on my network and installed the software on just that PC... Well when I went to install the software on my other 3 machines I did not have to... I simply went to set it up as a network printer and it automaticly installed the software from the host/printer PC... Very cool... So my vote is for Cannon... Seems to be a nice quiet printer too... Much quieter than either my Lexmark or Epson(s)

sounds good the only thing i have to say about canon is i have the canoscan 600 and if i ever have any trbl with it i call them and they say they no longer support it. that kinda sucks.

Boo for Lexmark Drivers. I have a Z52 and Lexmark support and their drivers are just terrible.

By wandering off into the area of other brands, my main point is being lost in the shuffle. Multifunction units are not networkable unless you can use accidentally discover what non-multifunction driver will address the printer alone.

On my system, I have my HP OfficeJet 700 installed as what it is, and I also have it installed as a HP DeskJet 550c. it might be worth a try to download other drivers from non-multifunction printers in the Lexmark line and see which will talk to your X85. Chances are, if you can find one, it will also allow you to share it for use over your LAN.

I have found a couple of ways for my X85 to work over the network. They're not too pretty, but they just about work!

On the PC it's connected to...a user must be logged in, in order for other computers to print. Also, the printer must be turned on (Power Save is OK too) when the user logs in. Share the printer, and then install a network printer on the other PCs, and the Lexmark software will be copied across to the other computers.


If this doesn't work properly, go to Printers in the Control Panel, go to the Properties of the printer, go to Print Processor, and change it from LexmarkX84-X85 to Winprint. This will use Windows' inbuilt printer driver, and not the crappy Lexmark driver/software.
