sharing internet on two computers with hub

I'm trying to share internet on two computers with a 5 port fast ethernet switch. It keeps giving internet to one computer at a time. I've tried changing the ip address on one computer so it doesn't interfere, but that still didn't help. How can I get it working?

I think you need a router to do this or ICS.

Thanks... I've tried changing the ip address on both computers in the TCP/IP protocol settings, but only one computer gets internet at a time out of the two computers. What am I doing wrong?

Your ISP only hands out 1 IP address, most of them charge more for additional addresses.

Most home ISPs only allow one PUBLIC IP address per residence. If they give you more, you pay extra for it. A home router takes that single public IP address and allows multiple internal computers to share it by handing out private IP addresses that communicate to the Internet using Network Address Translation.

Private IP addresses are usually in the ranges 192.168.xxx.xxx, 10.xxx.xxx.xxx, 176.xxx.xxx.xxx or 169.xxx.xxx.xxx. Most other addresses are public addresses which are tightly controlled on the Internet.

I totally agree. A router is a basic hardware software device that can distribute one internet connection so it can be shared by one or more computers. ICS is a basic software program that does in software some of what a router does with hardware and software. With a basic maximum sharing limited to two computer.

A switch is a totally dumb pass through device that has no hardware or software on how to share anything.
