I don't know if this is a Vista problem or a Samba problem. All I know is that it worked fine when I had XP.
I have a file server running on Debian. I put most of my downloads there as well as my music. I had been using iTunes, and it was a restore of my database from my XP install so nothing really changed there.
But I decided to set up Winamp as well. It was only detecting 1.02 GB in my music shared folder. I have over 14 GB of music.
I freaked out, thinking most of it somehow got deleted, but logging into the file server with PuTTY quickly revealed that this was not the case. What I've discovered is that for some reason, Windows isn't seeing all the files and folders in the shared directory.
iTunes has no trouble playing any song in the library, including ones that do not show up in Windows Explorer. I can also call up the direct path to an invisible file and Windows will open it. If I search the folder for "*" it finds some more folders and files, but not nearly all of them.
I've tried rebooting both my Vista workstation and my file server but this has made no difference. I tried changing the Samba server to use share-level permissions instead of user-level but this too made no difference.
I have been completely unable to find a legitimate reason that the files and folders aren't showing up. Does anyone have any ideas?
