I literally just finishing reading "Close to Shore: The Terrifying Shark Attacks of 1916"
by Michael Capuzzo yesterday. He's lucky he didn't get injured or even killed. That was almost definitely a great white. He's got balls if he gets back in the water.

Yeah, that's definitely a big fin. I don't know what I'd do if I saw a fin that big in the water.

So I was out surfing at my usual spot a few days ago, and a guy in the lineup said "Hey, is that a fin?" I looked over and sure enough, there was a fin, but a little one. Couldn't have been more than 8 inches high. We kinda joked about it and said "hope that the mother is not around" and for some odd reasons, just carried on as usual. There are usually dolphins around, but this fin was definitely triangular. Yup, I still have all my digits and limbs.

Have to say, he looked remarkably composed for someone who almost got gobbled up by a bloody big great white. That shove off and swim towards shore before he got picked up must have been a fun wait; expecting that big guy to get clear of the board's line, turn around, and try that exploratory bite one more time...lol sheeeeeeyit

I bet dinner was extra tasty and the beer mighty fine that night!

Hats off to surfers, I think this shows you have to be more than a little badass yourself to play where the men in grey suits live and work.

Ha, love how the media says "quick response key". Truth is the shark attacked the rope first. Didnt attack the surfer. Had it been the surfer first the outcome would have been much different. Surfer was lucky, no skill found. But, I would definitely rethink my profession if that was me.

It seems like the shark must have started to attack and maybe broke off once it realized he wasn't a seal or whatever it initially thought he was. I don't see how else he managed to not get bitten. I somehow doubt it just missed and then forgot he was there.

Meh. Statistically it is far more dangerous during the drive to get there. Living where I do you just get some sutures and perhaps surgeries and a cool story to tell, since fatalities are rare. I think the last one I read about was a older gentleman swimming off his dock over near Tampa. They suspect it was a bull shark in the river, that bit his legs off near the waist. That was a good number of years back.


A manatee popped up for air approx. 4 ft from my son, while we were out a few weeks ago. He paddled around to the other side of me in nothing flat.

Sometimes a shark will brush or bump his prey before attacking. Maybe that's what happened here.
