So you have money to burn and you want a 65 inch LCD that will do 1080p. Why not try the Sharp Aquos LC-65D90U? After all, it states that it will do 1080p. So that is what we did. The results were not what we expected.

Do any "terrestrial broadcast"s do 1080p? I'm pretty sure that DirectTV & such stop at 1080i, and most TV stations are only doin 720 right?

1080P is not part of the ATSC HDTV standard. Only 1080i is included in the standard

There is no 1080p HDTV transmission format

Waiting for broadcast 1080P is like waiting to get HDTV on your NTSC set.

It reminds me that when color TV was finally introduced here in Canada (1967), TV stations were inundated with calls from people complaining of having no colors on their B&W TV sets.

So, if Sharp says that 1080P is only available from over-the-air broadcasts (through the ATSC tuner), this is bull...

That's what they say if you talk to them on the phone.. We've tried twice, got 2 different operators, and that's what they say.

Combined with the evidence that everything we hook up to it only locks in at 1080i, and forcing 1080p over HDMI winds up with "Unsupported Signal", it seems Sharp has really added a feature in Name Only knowing that nobody will ever be able to test it with anything.

Many of the early 1080p sets do this. They claim 1080p only because the native resolution of the display is 1920 x 1080 but could never really accept a true 1080p signal. My Sony SXRD does this as well.

Does the 65" Aquos fall under "early 1080p" umbrella? It's a pretty new TV I believe...

You can get 1080P from Blu-ray\PS3 or a HTPC. Also the sharp will up convert 1080i to 1080p from HDTV sources.

they're both probably reading the same on-screen information.

well, those things /will/ generate 1080p outputs, yes, but the TV won't accept them. HDMI & component all cap out at 1080i with everything we've tried.

I just got off the phone with Sharp, yet again... I updated the VizWorld article with this:

Just got off the phone with Sharp, again. This time I got a slightly more coherent answer, but still not satisfactory. Previously they claimed the only way it would do 1080p was with a terrestrial broadcast signal, which doesn't make any sense since there isn't any ATSC 1080p spec for broadcast. So their TV is compatible with a mythical nonexistant signal? Maybe from aliens?

Well, with this phone call they simply fessed up: The TV doesn't support 1080p at all. Apparently the "p" in their 1080p means "Pixels", the screen physically has 1920x1080 pixels, but lacks any hardware to properly process a 1080progressive signal. I had the guy & his supervisor tell me repeatedly "The TV will take a 1080p signal, but cannot display it" which really makes no sense. After about 10 minutes of trying to get him to explain how it can "take" the signal but not display it, he finally admitted most you can get out of this TV is 1080i.

That blows man. You probably dropped a large chunk of change on that TV too

Kinda makes me glad I settled for a 50" 720p TV instead of spending $1000 more on a 1080p set.

Does anyone know who makes a "True" 1080p set?

my Sceptre 42" is TRUE 1080p LCD
no problem with PC to display 1920x1080 or play 1080p parts from PC (1080p MS examples).

But, for movies I'd not recommend it as poor black / grey levels ...

Can new Sony 46" do true 1080P from PC?
