Amazon Suits

I used to work the overseas fields and offshore platforms, but then I became an office pud and had to wear a suit every day. After two deployments, however, nothing fits anymore. I have a closet full of business suits, from $199 to $1,400: the perfect wardrobe, just 3 sizes too big. I was ready to haul off to the Mall, but this Amazon deal caught my eye. What do you get for $99? It was Amazon, after all, and worth a shot.

I am happy to say that I was astounded at the quality of these suits. They compared favorably with anything in my closet, and with anything (at any price) that I found at Men's Wearhouse or department stores. Esquire.com has a series of articles comparing high-end suits to budget suits, and the difference between off-the-rack and custom tailored. The Amazon suits meet every benchmark for quality tailoring (lining, stitching, tailoring technique, etc). My tailoring shop agrees, and could find no fault in the suits (the owner estimated that I had paid $600!). I have now bought six of these suits, in various styles, colors, and fabrics. Please allow me to share my observations.

Fabric: these are all wool/silk blends. Higher number means finer quality; Esquire recommends 120S. These suits range from 140S to 150S. The 150S fabric is noticeably nicer.

2-Button versus 3-Button: a matter of taste, but generally the taller you are, the more you will like the 2-button style.

Flat-front versus pleated pants: these suits use the 'Italian' model, and feature trousers that are 6 inches smaller than the chest measurement (e.g., a size 44 suit features waist 38 pants). The pleated pants are cut a bit fuller than the flat-style, but both styles can be taken in up to 2 inches or let-out 1 inch. All trousers are shipped un-hemmed. Most dry-cleaners or any tailoring shop can measure and hem these for you: expect to pay $10 to $20 per suit.

The suits I liked the best were the ones costing $115. There are also two specials running (exp unknown): Free shipping on two or more items (code 7GRMY8JZ at checkout), and Extra 5% OFF when you buy 4 or more items (automatic in cart). Note that the deal specifies "Items", including neckties. Delivery was very fast, and service was top-notch. I bought several sizes, and the returns were accepted without question and the refunds prompt.

I know this isn't hardware, but it is computer-related. I don't care how big a nerd you may be: Everyone needs at least one suit (that fits!) for the big interview or special date. And you can't just buy it the day before

Edit:

I didn't want to make a big deal of it, but all of the labels, fabric stamps, and tailoring marks are in Italian. Made in Italy? Who knows, but the suits I bought sure do look/feel/measure like the other Italian suits I own.

This is called the "drop". 6 inches is standard, but skinnier or more athletic (big shouldered) guys may want 7 or even 8.

Interesting deal. The price is certainly right.

$2700 MSRP selling for $99 or 199? ...wat's the catch? Most of my suits are $400-1000 (I paid half or less off the sticker). I'm really curious to see what these suits are like. I'm not sure if the fit will work though as I have a skinnier more athletic build (16 neck-40 chest-32 waist) which makes many suits and shirts baggy at the waist.

i'm guessing it's a sweatshop type operation in india/pakistan/vietnam/thailand/malaysia/etc. i got 5 suits for ~500 in thailand two years ago. not the highest quality in either materials or workmanship, but seems better than the always half-off crap for $200 at jos. a. bank i've gotten before. and certainly better than whatever you could get at wally world or target for the same price.

I am looking at the blk pinstripe...sweet...Since all suits fit different, would you buy the exact size of other suits that you have or would you go bigger. I just bought a Calvin Klien suit but also like these....not sure of the fit.

I really want to try a pair but after reading it's standard size is drop 6, the pants will be too big for me. I just need a 34" pants with a 44 chest. I can stretch the pants to a drop 8 (36 pants) and just have it repaired without having to re-cut it. But 38 pants is just too big and will need re-cutting to make it fit.

Any place that sells suits, your mall stores, Macys, JC Penny, etc you can get measured. Try on a few suits and jackets while you are there. Get an idea what type of shirts, collars, and breasted styles you like. I would definitely do this before ordering a suit online for the first time.

Same here. I'm a 46L with a 34 waist.

Also be aware they are merino or worsted wool so you won't be wearing these when the weather warms up outside....just a thought

Not true. I live in Texas and these seem the perfect weight for year-round use. I have been wearing them up to 85 degrees so far with no problem. The richest fabric (the 150S) seems as light as any of the other suits I have in the closet, just softer and more 'deluxe'.

Not trying to shill, but rather to add the light of experience to legitimate issues.
