Second deal posted, go easy! This was $89 + $10 shipping, the lowest I've seen it otherwise is $125 at etronics.com

I ordered this MD-SR60 here at electronicsemall yesterday. It shipped today. At first I was a little leary about this site, so we'll see what happens.

The unit is new, not refurbished, according to the FAQ.

You can see details on the MD-SR60 here at Sharp..

Also see a review here.

I'll post about the quality of shipping (which was $10) and product when I get it, should be a day or two.

Just sorta a little warning/comment-a lot of the Sharp MD machines tend to have an early failure. Check out www.minidisc.org.
That said, MiniDisc is a WONDERFUL format....I've got a sony portable and a sony home deck, and I haven't used my Compaq iPaq MP3 player since I got the MD stuff a few months ago (anyone want to buy it I HIGHLY reccomend the MD format, though personally I am not interested in sharp's machines.

I've had a Sharp MD-MS722 for about 18 months now and it works great. It gets at least 2-3 hours daily use too. But then again this is a different model. Love MiniDisc...never understood why it hasn't caught on here in the U.S.

I have had a Sharp MD702 since 1999 with no problems at all. I didn't
like the Sony because (in the past at least) you had to stop it to
change the volume while recording. The Sharp can be adjusted on the
fly as you check your levels (good for stealth recording of live shows).

Anyone know of any portables that have optical or digital output?
Most seem to have optical in but only analog output. That makes
it impossible to transfer to CDR without going D-A-D.

Unfortunately, there aren't any current portable models that have digital output. I believe the Sony M-1 (one of the very early Sony models, not sure exactly what model number off the top of my head though) offered digital out, but none have had it since then. I guess they don't want people making copies of each others MDs. I recently had this problem, too and ended up getting a Sony JE-510 deck off of Ebay for a little over $100. The only option you probably have if you need digital out is to get a MD deck. Also, the new netMD portable units do not let you copy music back from the MD to your PC, so that won't work either.

if memory serves me right, there is no comparison here. the MZR-700 is a much better product, it is MDLP capable, digital and analog recording level control. I chose the MZ-G750 because the remote was better and it also had a AM/FM radio. Only thing about the G750 is that it doesn't have auto song titling.
here's the spec for the MZ-R700 You can also find a review there. Minidisc.org is a very good place for all info about minidiscs.

Link to Sharp MD-SR60 on Minidisc.org

The only thing I don't like about MDs is that the older machines there's no speed record, at least not in mine. So when I record 5 hours of music onto the MD, then I'd have to wait 5 hours before it finishes. The new netMDs can xfer songs through USB cable with titles and all and an 80min MD is done in about 3 mins. If you're going for a new MD, i'd wait just a little longer until more netMDs come out and you have more of a selection if you don't have the patience for the 5 hour wait time.

So, how would I transfer mp3s from my comp onto an MD? Would it take 5 hours to fill up the while disc?

well you have 2 choices. if you have a digital out on your sound card, you can run a wire to the analog input of the MD. the second option, a much better solution, is using the Optical cable. Most MDs come with the package and software (music match). It is a usb -> optical out device and you plug the digital optical cable into the optical input of the MD. If your computer has a digital optical out, it's the same thing. You then play mp3s on music match and record on the MD at the same time. Hence you would have to wait 5 hours if you had 5 hours of music you wanted to record. The discs are 74 or 80mins. LP4 mode on an 80min MD can hold 5hours 32mins roughly.

Just wanted to point out real quick that the audio quality of LP4 mode is not that great. It's fine for recording lectures and other stuff like that, but you probably don't want to use it for music unless you don't care how bad it sounds. LP2 mode is fairly acceptable for casual listening, however, and will give you twice minutes that the MD is rated for (so an 80 minute MD can record 160 minutes in LP2). Also, you can switch to mono mode (at least in SP mode, not sure if you can do this with the LP modes or not) to get twice the amount of minutes, it's just not in stereo anymore. So an 80 minute MD recorded in SP mono mode can also hold 160 minutes.

Another bump for MiniDisc. My wife has a Sharp MD-S722 (I think that's correct) portable unit, and we put a Sony something-or-other in the car. So I record MP3's or whatever to the MD and play them in the car. VERY convenient.

one thing that I have had issues with MD is that when you record an MD digitally, you cannot make a digital copy of it...copy protection.

In other words if you have a CD player or Computer with Optical output and you record that MD from it you won't be able to make digital copies of it for your friends or one for your car...of course you can analog copy till you're blue in the face...otherwise...MD is great! I just wish In-Dash players were more affordable

I usually record in LP4 because I take it to my office everyday and the speakers on the LCDs aren't that great and I can't turn them up real loud anyways. So I get about 6-7 hours of music in everyday on my MD. It's just what works for every person individually. I don't personally mind that it's not the highest quality. I think LP4 is like 96bit rate so that's why you can squeeze 5.5 hours into a single MD. Decide for yourself, do your research before buying as always.

Same here, proud owner of a MD-MS722 for just as long, never had a problem with it - use it religiously!

Hey-
I've been researching the current portable MD player/recorders that Sony has to offer, and the reviews try to make it sound like the Sony MZ-R900DPC is the only portable with the ability to digitally transfer audio from the computer via usb and record it on an MD, without conversion or loss of quality. Is this true? If not- what other Sony models can do it? Thanks.

depends-I would have bought a MD deck for $400 YEARS ago if they had offered the computer links like they have now. What I have is a Xitel DG-2 (careful...they make another model that's not the DG2 and is not optical out...it's ANALOG) Basically, you plug it in the USB port, it acts like a USB sound card, and has a TOSLINK connector on the other end. You can hook this to the optical in of the MD deck and play in your favorite media program. Lossless dubbing. I think they go for like $50 on eBay, I got mine along with a MZ-R70 and like 30 MD's for $100 on eBay (great deal That combined with my MDS-JE510 Deck is enough MD for me...for now.
So, this offers you a lossless connection, but doesn't offer the computer based titleing and similar of the netMD decks.
MD's are just SOOOOOO damn cute......
