mkuhlke,
I have two Panasonic portable CD players with optical out that I use to record CD to MD all the time. I did a search to see what you could order and cannot believe how little there is for US consumers. Almost half the portable CD players sold here in Japan have optical out.
If you really want one, I can price some for you out in town. With the current yen rate, the deals should be pretty good.

Hi all, I received my shipment yesterday, after ordering on Monday! (Ground from NY is only 1 day for me)

Everything seems fine, packaged well and brand new as expected. Again I was leary of electronicsemall.com, but no disappointments here. Their web site needs a bit of polishing.

I do agree that other models have lots of extra features that this Sharp doesn't, but for the price it seems OK for my needs. This will be for recording practice sessions with an acoustic instrument. So the mic input was important, which the lower Sony's don't have AFAIK. Although I suppose you can use a powered mic and go through the line input..

Can't transfer MP3 files from PC? Seems this is the most important function it should have.

Can't transfer them, but recording your MP3s is a piece of cake. I have the MZR700DPC. I make a playlist with WinAmp of whatever songs I want to record. I pop in the USB connector, press record on my MD player and press play on Winamp. It records digitally, and sounds great

Of course, it's in realtime, so it's a bit slow, but I don't mind. It's like those old school cassette tape mixes you used to make Plus I think it much better having a bunch of MD mixes that you can just pop in an out, as opposed to an MP3 player that you need to wipe out the songs and re-transfer.

NetMD's offer an exciting glimpse into the MD future I think the coolest part of my MD player is that it's so "gadgety"

I just look over the menu, and couldn't find how to connect it through USB if want to record it in real time. It has Analog in and Digital in, if using PC, guess it can only use sound card's line-out port, dunt know how the sound quality turns out to be.

actually, the usb device called the xitel md port dg2 connects to your pc through a usb interface and then will connect to your md player through the optical (digital) connection.

some of the higher sony units come with this in the package, called the digitical pclink

I always wondered why MDs were never used widespread for PC data storage. MDs were introduced more than a decade ago, and they are way better and can store more than ZIP disks. Too bad Sony never made an MD MUSIC DISKDrive to transfer MP3s or AC3 files so we don't have to resort to only the optical link option.
Other than that, MDs are great. Proud owner of Sony MZR91.

Thank the RIAA. There IS an MD Data Format, though the disks are SLIGHTLY different. The RIAA made Sony make MD Audio a different format than MD Data. The MD Data discs look a lot more like tiny CD Caddies, with the shutter covering the spindle. However, you can put MD Audio disks in the MD Data deck and use it as a standalone player, however, you CANNOT access the audio through the drive on your computer. There was one company that hacked the drive/firmware to allow it to read/write audio on the computer for like radio stations, but it's about a $5000 unit. We can dream...
