Shave off driveway bumps to smooth over cement pads

Being cited by the city, and rather than pouring new concrete I'd rather see if I can get the uneven pads shaved off like the city does with their streets. Already had some surprising numbers just to have it leveled, that's why I'm seeing if having the drive smoothed out can be done on a private home-owner level for less. Don't know if concrete guys can do that, or who I should even call.

I'm assuming that the driveway is heaved a bit where it meets the sidewalk - is that what you're talking about? (Or the sidewalk is sunk where it meets the driveway)

But, pictures so we know what the heck you're actually talking about? The solution may take into account what the local area looks like. E.g., the quality of work in a neighborhood of half million dollar homes, versus some sort of grinding solution in a more blue-collar type neighborhood. (No offense meant.)

Also, instead of shaving the driveway down (presumably to meet the sidewalk), why not pour a new top over the existing sidewalk to bring it up to the driveway. Likewise if it's separate driveway slabs that are uneven - build one up instead of grinding one down.

I don't have the energy to make a troll thread based on this. This is a sad day.

Some of the driveway slabs have about a 1-2" difference between them. Someone could potentially trip on them.

No one's ever had their drive-way leveled out?

It's common thing to need done. You can rent a large concrete grinder or hire a company to do it. You can also cut a bunch of grooves with a grinder and chisel it down. It might be quicker and less effort to cut out small sections and place some new concrete.

And the city actively cited you over your private property for this??? Or is this the "eminant domain" portion of your driveway that technically they're responsible for but will muscle you into maintaining?

In my city none of that matters. If they deem a hazardous condition exists on your property that is easily accessible to anyone walking by then they can force you to correct it.

We are also responsible, up to a point, to maintain the sidewalk they put in front of our property. I believe the will come replace it if it fails completely.

It's personal property and even though the city claims the sidewalk they can make us repair that too, out of our own pockets.

Being cited by the city for bumps in your driveway? Tell them it is just traffic calming measures, and to go pound sand.

It depends a lot on the city and location. The last time I wanted to do a little work on a sidewalk, the city wanted a $50k bond and two million in general liability insurance.

Yeah. All of the surrounding cities have grown just as bad along side the city where my house is. I mean it's like section 8 coming in and citing you for the smallest of things. Believe me, every time I cut my grass I blow it all in the street and down the sewer. Makes me feel like "yeah F you city" then I think about who's tax dollars it will be to clean out the sewer pipes and by that time I just forget about it and repeat "f*ck you *city*"

That's a touch anti-social, don't you think?

Are you one of those self entitled assholes that force cities to make such rules in the first place?
