If I recall correctly, the "Psychic Friends Network" paid her under $2k for what she did; they pulled in millions a month by duping people into being charged for free readings. The accent, and the psychic ability (obviously) were fake. Though admittedly fake as far as the psychic ability goes.

I'm kind of torn on the whole hatred for Miss Cleo and others of her ilk. Sure, con artists are scum and should be slowly flayed on primetime TV. But anyone that gets taken in by psychics kind of deserves what they get. A fool and his money are soon parted and if psychics don't fleece them someone else would.

It was obvious that she doesn't possess the same level of thievery skills as a common tv preacher. They fly around in multimillion dollar jets while she tried to con viewers to call her psychic hotline. If she'd jumped around on the tv screen in the name of Jesus she might have fared better.

No, if I was ever dumb enough to have it happen to me the person I'd blame most would be me. There's a difference between being taken because you work for Enron and being taken because you went to a psychic of your own free will. Victim blaming applies to one and not the other and anyone that doesn't understand the difference is destined to be a victim for their entire life.

I once saw a woman ask Sylvia Browne about her husband. She said "I lost my husband a few years back and I'd just like to know that he's okay." The answer was "I'm sorry, but he's not okay. Your husband is dead - he drowned." The woman then looked very confused before responding: "When I said I lost my husband, I meant he died. He was a fireman killed when the Twin Towers collapsed." A lot of stuttering followed.

RIP Miss Cleo. I consider all psychics to be fakes, but I do know some people who claim comfort from paying money to someone who will tell them that good things are going to happen to them. I've offered to fill that position myself, rates negotiable, but apparently there's a dress code or a union or something.
