Shur-bet. The way i see it, if it were shur-burt, it would have a second r in it. You know, like sherbert. But it's spelled sherbet, and reading a word correctly is something people should be able to do before they get out of grade school.

Sorry, mispronouncing a word is a pet peeve of mine. It's the fastest way to prove stupidity.

who the hell says 1 and 3?

i only say reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeedikyouluss when im being stupid

I hear # 1 on TV *ALL THE TIME*, so I know it's not just a local dialect. National news does it, and I'm not just talking about the guests. TV commercials do it, too. I know it's not just a local dialect. The misuse is more commonplace than "nucular" / "nuclear". I hear "furmiliar" as often, or more often than "familiar." Listen closely, and you'll see it, too. No matter how many times I correct my furmily, I can't get them to stop saying it. I still hear # 3 almost daily, because there are a lot of uneducated types around here.

In related news, nearly 5/6 of ATOT posters are borderline illiterate.

EDIT: Looks like it's closer to 4/5. Kudos, ATOT! Only 4/5 of you are retards.

I say sherbert because one of my favorite songs of all time, All Word No Play by Sage Francis (a lovely piece of word play) uses it: Sherbert and Ernie padlock Ness Monster... It just doesn't work with sherbet (cause who the hell are Bit and Ernie?).

The fact that it's been so abused as to be accepted by the abusers does not mean it's really correct. There are other notable cases of word abuse becoming accepted by the masses-- but that doesn't make it good English. (I've always felt that people pronouncing it as "sherbert" came off as a mite retarded, although I try to be charitable.)

Something to keep in mind:
Languages evolve.

Yes, it is now a variant in some dictionaries, resulting from many people saying the word incorrectly. It is even harder for me to believe that people can actually spell it that way than to say it.

Many people say a word or two the wrong way. Sometimes an error catches on, for whatever reason.

So then "sherbert" is good English.

Shurr-butt

The way the arabians intended it to be said.

Edit:
BTW - Sherbet and Sorbet are two totally different things.

No. It's a corruption that has started to show up in some dictionaries due to extreme abuse by the untutored masses. It is also still a top way to point yourself out as a dumbass.

Depends on where I am:
back home: shar-bat
US: Sher-bit

It's sor bay only if it's spelled sorbet...for me at least.

If it's spelled sherbet, why isn't it sher-bay? Why isn't sorbet sore-bit?

Really, I just call it a pussy excuse for ice cream, and avoid eating it.
