Sheriff Joe Arpaio puts inmates on bread and water for destroying US flag

Dozens of inmates in Arizona jails have been put on a diet of bread and water for desecrating U.S. flags that hang in their cells, Reuters reports. Sheriff Joe Arpaio, of Maricopa County, told the news agency that 38 inmates in six different jails were getting meals of bread and water twice daily – the punishment for destroying government property while in custody. “These inmates have destroyed the American flag that was placed in their cells. Tearing them, writing on them, stepping on them, throwing them in the toilet, trash or wherever they feel,” Arpaio said in a statement. “It's a disgrace to those who have fought for our country.”

Arpaio said the punishment will last seven days; a second offense would bring 10 additional days of the bread-and-water diet.
There are about 8,300 inmates in the jail system. Dan Pochoda, legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union in Arizona, called the move a “publicity stunt.”
“It's certainly not illegal, but what he is doing is bad policy,'' Pochoda told Reuters. “It's just another vindictive policy that has nothing to do with running a good jail system.”

The Maricopa County jails have, in recent months, played patriotic songs over the public address systems, including “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.” Arpaio, a six-term sheriff, has cemented his persona as a tough-as-nails lawman, coming under criticism in recent years for his actions, including a hard-line stance on immigration.

Arpaio is facing a lawsuit from the U.S. Justice Department accusing him of civil rights abuses, over allegations he and his officers profile Latinos.
The Arizona immigration law that was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court allows police in the state to ask people they stop about their immigration status.

I'm pretty sure bread and water constitutes 'cruel and unusual ' especially for a week or longer. It's not about nutrition, it's about constipation. That is what makes bread and water a harsh sentence.

This guys an absolute joke. Why do the people in his county put up with that crap?

Because the wealthy mainly conservative folks in Phoenix think he's doing an absolutely bang up job keeping the riffraff of the streets. Look at all the political shenanigans that come out of Arizona. Maricopa county and the Governor Jan Brewer are an embarrassment to the State and the Nation.

But remember, Bloomberg is a Nazi for trying to ban 64 oz sodas.

Bloomberg quest to ban large sodas was not the only thing that some considered unconstitutional. Think long and hard on this one. It rhymes with "cop and whisk". It also presumes someone is a criminal rather than treating the like shit because they are one.

Depends on the bread. I've heard of some prisons making what they refer to as "the loaf" which contains all the nutrient content required (has lots of vegetables thrown in) and doesn't cause constipation as its high in fiber. So long as this is the case, I don't have a problem with it.

The ACLU disagrees with you:

The amazing thing is that the flag stands for the right to burn it which I feel no need to do because I have that right.

Why stop there? How about a nutrient sufficient shake? Why not Soylent?

It seems to me that when viewed from the outside, prisoners in general are regarded as less human and automatically deserving of their punishment(s). No thought for wrongly imprisoned or the non-violent. They are also getting the same treatment irrespective of the facts.

Oh yeah, fuck you Joe!

The ACLU disagrees with you:
I would reply that Dan Pochoda and the rest of the ACLU are poor students of history and have never observed or experienced a diet of bread and water. Moreover, their medical 'experts ' are from the same privileged group. Finally, if there's one thing our corporate overlords have taught us is the size of the chasm between "legal " and responsible.

Maricopa County must be rolling in money, at the rate they are volunteering to get sued. I should go check it out.

The LOAF is also sold at Whole Foods.

Well you see... when one gets convicted of a crime and goes to the slammer... one tends to lose a few rights.

Feel free to burn your own flag and i will protect that speech. Burn mine and I will defend it to your demise.

Same holds true here with the inmates. But you already know that.

This isn't a universal treatment. This is for prisoners who are behavior problems.

I am suggesting that the ACLU is hardly a radical right group that would tend to turn a blind eye to cruel and unusual punishment.

Do you disagree with that assessment?

No, the ACLU is all about 'winnable' fights. Just like all lawyers, they care more for winning at the game of politics than for human dignity.
