I thought I had gotten rid of them. I began running twice (yea only twice!) a week and they're back. What can I do? I ice and stretch after every workout but only rest seems to help. Pain is the inner part of the shin near the bottom. Am I running wrong?

I run heel to toe I guess. I try to lift my leg when moving, rather than push forward so I believe I'm making contact with the ground just below my hips. I used to run only on my toes, and that brought out the pain 10x more.

I always ice after running, but what are these rehab exercises I can do??

I've mostly converted from being a heel striker to being a mid-sole runner and I haven't had shin splints in quite awhile. That said they used to go away once I got trained but would comeback if I started over-training.

Same. Changing from hell to sole-strike has pretty much prevented me from getting shin splints anymore. I sound louder on a treadmill, but I don't give a shit

Running on your toes is NOT the proper alternative to heel striking. If you just stay up on your toes the entire time, you'll likely blow out your calf/achilles/ankle/etc. The proper alternative is to land on the ball of your foot and then allow the rest of the foot (even the heel) to make contact. Look into POSE and barefoot running techniques to learn to do it properly.

That is exactly what I've been doing. I learned pose from these forums and by trying to emulate proper technique, shin splits have popped up...probably from running too much.

i had really bad shin splints when i first started running. i went to the doctor twice and he told me to take a week break and let them fully heal, start slowly and work my way up again. didnt work. after lots of reading on bodybuilding.com lots of people recommended getting better shoes. at the time i had some asiics that i got on sale for $40 at foot locker. because they were brand new and asiics i didnt think the shoes were the problem.

i decided to follow everyones advice and got some real running shoes(new balance mr993) and the shin splints never came back. great shoes i highly recommend them.

Just to reiterate whats been said here really, get a good pair of shoes. Make sure to stretch/warm up properly. After running make sure to cool down/stretch. I would only ice if there is serious inflammation from something like a sprain etc. Putting ice on a muscle like that after hard exercise can be very bad for it because it causes the muscle to tighten even more. Ibuprofen is a great friend for these types of things. As a side note, it has been proven that ibuprofen before exercise increases stamina of muscles.

are asics gel kayano bad running shoes? have I fallen under the marketing spell?

I usually just go run, walk 5-10 minutes back, then stretch, shower, and finally ice for 15 minutes after the shower. Is this ok?

Have you checked to see if you pronate at all? These are for non-pronators. Chances are you can do fine with something cheaper, but it's a very individual thing and it's hard to tell what will work for you (aside from getting the proper pronation control). You are best off picking what feels best in the store, although you never really know until you've run in them for real for a while.
