FedEx ground has some very good shipping rates and up until recently you had to go to an (isolated) FedEx ground counter to pay for and drop off packages in order to take advantage of their cheap shipping rates.

In late May, fedex and kinko's partnered up to offer fedex ground and express service at select fedex kinko's locations for the same low fedex rates you get at the fedex counter!! You can check out www.fedex.com in order to find a nearby location. I saved some time and gas by walking to the local kinko's rather than driving out to counter. Of course, some people will benefit more than others, but it's worth checking out nonetheless.

FedEx Ground is a great deal when shipping something over 3lbs. The price is much better for heavier stuff than the USPS... although, FedEx Ground might take 5 days to get to the other side of the country.

Be careful though -- you can't send packages via "ground" service to residential destinations. Instead, you're forced to use FedEx Home Delivery, which has some differences. Amongst them, they charge more than ground, and they deliver Tue-Sat (no Monday delivery!). In general, I believe FedEx Ground and Home Delivery have extra charges for signature on delivery, and (the worst part) the drivers are independent agents who bid for routes in their local areas. So, you're not dealing with FedEx delivery staff -- you're dealing with Joe Deliveryman. If there's a problem with the delivery, GOOD LUCK! It's next to impossible for FedEx's customer service reps to obtain info once it's handed off to the local delivery agency. Still, it's a nice, inexpensive option for commercial delivery, especially when doing product returns and don't have a prepaid return label.

hmm... what's generally cheaper for ground these days? UPS or FedEx. What about home delievery? Does UPS charge extra for their residential delievery areas?

In my experience, FedEx has been the cheaper option. Yes, UPS does charge extra for deliveries to residential addresses.

Been there, done that, don't want to do it again!

For ground, I think Fedex is the cheapest. At least better than UPS and USPS for over 3 lbs. I've sent over 30-40pacakges so far and no complain from the receivers.

Too bad Airborne freaking BLOWS. Our company has a large account with Airborne and we're switching vendors. They screwed up shipments almost every week. I know we had cases where our products sat in a warehouse for a week and Airborne just didn't tell anyone or deliver. Last week I heard they had a plane problem in Ohio, so they decided not to call or tell anyone, even thought the shipment was next day early morning. We found out late afternoon the next day.

They are riddled with problems. It's hopeless.

fedex bought out kinkos
Unfortunately, they didn't replace the tards working at Kinkos.

I took my package to the Kinkos in Camarillo, CA a few weeks ago to ship FedEx Ground. I use the Ground service about once a month, so I've done it maybe a dozen times now at the real FedEx place. I thought I'd give the Kinkos a try since it's closer to my workplace.

The Kinkos guy insisted on making a computer generated address label for the package (the real FedEx place allows my own label to suffice). No big deal except it took the guy an entire five minutes to type in the addresses (very little keyboard experience with this guy). I looked over the label. He copied the delivery address incorrectly. He didn't know how to edit the last transaction. Start over. Another five minutes.

The Kinkos transaction took about twenty minutes total as I had to wait a while for service, as this guy was figuring out where all the letters are on the keyboard, and then as he figured out the cash register. Fortunately, there was no one else waiting.

The real FedEx place often has a line of a few people, but the real FedEx people waste no time in doing their thing.

I won't use the Kinkos place for a while. Maybe they'll get their stuff together in a year or so and I'll try again. Until then, I go to the real FedEx.

Watch out. If you choose FedEx Ground and ship it to a residential address they WILL charge you $1.75 more even if it doesn't show that in the estimated cost.
Just look at your bill/credit card statement and you will see the $1.75 more charge.
I would go with FedEx Home if you make a delivery to a residential address.
FedEx only had declared value and that IS NOT insurance. If you want to insurance a package choose Airborne which has REAL insurance, but is more than declared value.
Rates with Airborne and FedEx are about the same.
Anything 2 pounds or under I would go with USPS.
I don't use UPS at all since the packages are more prone to being damaged and their rates are more expenisve! Why pay more for the same service, but more likely to get damaged goods?
For me Airborne package always comes in great shape and have less of that black crap on the boxes.
Airborne also charges $1.75 for delivery to a residential address.

If you want rates just go to www.fedex.com and click on calculate. Same with Airborne and UPS.
If you use Airborne's estimator make sure to deduct the $3 pick up fee they always put in the esitimates.

I despise UPS because I can never get my stuff from them without chasing the package around for a few days.

I like the USPS a lot and I use them the most, but the prices for stuff over 3lbs is just too much.

For stuff over 3lbs, I go with FedEx Ground or FedEx Home. It does take longer than most USPS services, but you can track the package with FedEx which you can't REALLY do with the USPS.

FedEx Home is like $0.80 more. No big deal in my eyes.

I've not even looked at Airborne or DHL. It's just not something I've needed to do yet.
