Also shockingly good was the original Running Scared with Billy Chrystal and Gregory Hines, imo.

But mostly I second 25th Hour.

Those aren't shocking. Clerks was a good movie so it stood to reason the sequel would be decent. Little Miss Sunshine has enough comedic star tallent for a half dozen movies.

Great movie although it started out kinda slow.

The Chronicles of Riddick

Not a great movie by any means, but I was completely shocked that it was a lot better than I had thought it would be.

A Sound of Thunder was much better than I expected IMDB.

I'd read the short story a long time ago, and I remembered it just ending with a Twilight Zone-style shock of the world being destroyed. This was a solid B+ movie with very good special effects for the budget and a well-done expansion of the story.

The director (Peter Hyams) also did a good monster movie a while back, The Relic

Memento was shockingly good, considering it came and went from theatres with next to zero fanfare.

Requiem for a Dream
Running Scared was pretty good
i also liked Hitch, thought it was gonna be really cheesy but Eva is drop dead gorgeous and paired Willy pretty well.

I still don't understand why Requiem is always on people's favorites lists. It's an over-dramatized, unrealistic, stereotypical D.A.R.E. movie with cinematography that gives you a headache after the first 15 minutes. It's a typical story of what MIGHT happen if you're a moron and abuse whatever you get your hands on and have absolutely no self control, all the while making every wrong choice you can. And don't tell me it's a story of your typical dope addict (heroin or otherwise), because it's not. And anyone who believes it isn't learning anything, they're just Ooh-ing and Ahh-ing at an exaggerated concept that exploits poorly-founded stereotypes for shock factor.

*ahem*

That is all.

It's not supposed to be realistic or even educational. It's just supposed to be a wild ride. I enjoyed it a lot but of course it's not for everyone.

Requiem for a Dream was one of the very few films that I have watched that actually got a serious emotional reaction from me. The refrigerator freaking out really got under my skin, and the end is jsut depressing. Usually even with really depressing movies I am not very affected, and even less with most of the "horror" movies out today, some fancy special effects and scary music just don't get to me. So, when a movie actually has the ability to get me emotionally invested I tend to like it. It is obviously an extreme example just how rapidly and compeltely their lives fell apart, but that doesn't change the fact that millions of people in the US really have had their lives ruined because of drugs like these. They might now have fallen in such theatrical fashion, but their lives end up just as bad, and they are REAL people.
