Do you wear shoes indoors, or do you (and your guests) leave shoes in the mudroom/foyer?

I grew up with the rule that shoes worn outside weren't to touch floors indoors. I'm curious to see if many other people follow the same practice.

On the one hand, it seems pretty unorthodox and anal-retentive. On the other hand, it makes a hell of a lot of sense to do this. It keeps floors cleaner, puts you at ease to walk around barefoot, and (for me at least) is more comfortable.

Shoes come off in my house. I feel torn between taking them off in other peoples houses. I feel like I should but then I also fell like they want nothing to do with my feet.

All the reasons you listed, plus I have cats that trust me not to step on them. Sadly, that trust isn't justified.

At my parents' house, shoes stay on-- with their hardwood floors, I'm not too worried about tracking mud or anything in. My parents clean their house enough that they're not worried about people bringing extra dirt in on their shoes (4 kids, a dog and a cat will do that to you, I guess).

In our apartment, I like to have shoes off because our carpet is already gross enough without us tracking more in from the outside.

As long as somebody doesn't prop their shoed feet on my bed, couch, coffee table or kitchen table I don't care who wears shoes in my home.

I've never been to somebody's house where they wanted me to take my shoes off when I entered and I would never ask that of somebody else. But don't come into my home treating it like it's trash because I wouldn't do that to yours.

If your shoes are dirty from mud or something then you should have the courtesy to take them off before entering though.

Shoes off. Tracking all the nasty stuff you walk through in the course of a day inside is just gross.

I just don't like shoes. I never have. My mom said that when I was little and she first put shoes on me, and I stood up in them, I just stood there, and started to move like my feet were dragging cement. Then I started crying. I'm a bit better about them now, though I still don't like them much.

My shoes usually come off as soon as I come in the door, just because I don't like having them on. Same goes for anything of that nature, such as watches. I don't like the way it protrudes from me, since I always manage to bang it on things like walls as I'm walking around. I also don't care for the constant contact against my skin, it just gets distracting.
At home, no watches, no shoes, no socks.

I wear shoes indoors at times, my family either wears socks or shoes at all times except when going to bed. I walk around barefoot when I can as I prefer barefoot over wearing socks or shoes. I'll even walk around barefooted in a friends house not thinking about it and depending on their customs, I'll be acting 'polite' and not even know it. (Opposed to people who take off their shoes because they're told to)

over here there's a stereotype about asians in that asians are characteristic for demanding people to remove their shoes before entering a house...

Therefore, I thought only asians did this. So unless the majority of people who voted in the poll are asian, the stereotype holds no water...

Off, one of mandatory traits of being an Asian.

I always thought wearing shoes in the house as unsanitary and disgusting. Don't want to sound arrogant but it seems uncivilized.

My place, shoes usually come off, but sometimes i'll keep them on if i'm going out again. Other people's places, I'll ask the first time I come in unless there is a party or something (no one else has their shoes off so I won't bother).

I usually take them off if I know I'm going to be home for a while and transfer to a pair of flip-flops. We have brick/wood floors, but I don't like tracking nasty stuff throughout the house.

I am not Asian.

We wear shoes in the house but I take mine off as soon as possible anyway so I rarely have them on.
I have a number of friends at who's houses I take them off and leave the socks on though.

Depends on the floor. At my own residence I always go shoeless. Typically I'll ask the person if they'd like me to take my shoes of at the door or not.

There is no absolute answer for this.
Could be on or could be off, though more often than not they are off.

I think it also depends on the shoe and how long you are staying. If you are popping in wearing dress shoes, or tramping around the house in flip-flops.

Off. Slippers, flip-flops, clogs, what have you are fine, as long as they're indoor-only.

Just thought of another factor: foot condition. I don't want swamp thing feet or hobbit feet touching my floors.
