If I had my own house I would take my shoes off before I hit carpeting, but my parents are slobs so I don't bother. Although, I do take my shoes off before I get to my bedroom.

My dad always brings up this story about how he had to work on installing a fireplace at this house outside of town. The couple that lived there asked that he take his work boots off when he worked, even though my dad was going to be going from his truck outside to back in the house every 5-10 minutes (for parts, tools, etc). He said he wasn't going to do that so they told him to leave.

We take shoes off in our house, but in that case, we usually give the workmen a plastic bag to cover their shoes with. If its work that causes a mess, then we just clean the area.

It's unsanitary for sure. Even if you clean everyday, do you know how dirty the house gets even WITHOUT SHOES? I clean up to make sure crap doesn't lie around my kitchen, and even if I vacuum, if I run a dry swiffer wipe across the kitchen floor after 2 days, you would be SURPRISED at how much dust and dirt attaches to that thing. Now imagine if everyone wore shoes... That stuff on my swiffer wipe would quadruple!

You can just say it's required for work and it's code. My mom usually tells workers that, but they tell us its code sometimes (maybe it's BS or whatever), but they're nice enough to say that if we offer them bags they can wear that over their shoes if we're still uncomfortable about shoes in the house, which my mom then promptly says no because their shoes are usually clean to begin with.

I don't ask anyone to take their shoes off when they come to my apartment... I live on the third floor, so I figure anything will probably end up falling off on the walk up, and everyone wipes their shoes on the doormat outside.

personally, I take my shoes off whenever I know I'm going to be home for awhile. when I come home from work or after going out at night, I take my shoes off... but I don't take them off if I'm just going to be home for a little while and then going back out. too much work involved

Shoes always come off. Prevents even more dirt from being tracked into my house. For me its nt that hard to take my shoes off so it's habit now. plus i can get into bed or put me feet up without worrying about getting anything dirty

Had these people been completely insulated from working class individuals all their lives?

Here, we know that if someone's here to do work that's dirty, like working on a stove, or rebuilding a wall, well, there's going to be dirt in the house. We will try to show them ways in that are more direct, or which bypass anything we don't want dirty.

most workmen i know carry booties for their shoes if that kind of thing happens

it really depends on the kind of floor. we had an apartment that had a carpet on all the floor. shoes definently come of then. but we now live in a house that has a tiles and so taking shoes off (assuming they aren't wet or really dirty) isn't too much of a concern.

I wear my sneakers around outside all day, and when i come home its not as if ive been walking through a garbage dump... ive been walking on pavement.

Obviously my house is a LOT cleaner than yours. You'd be surprised if you used a swiffer wipe to find out how much dirt comes in with your shoes...
