Finding a job sucks

It was for a job at my university's printer shop (take mass orders, go out and service the schools printers, crap like that)

I felt like the interview was going well right up until the very end. We were wrapping everything up then he said "one more question, if you are hired what will you bring that will benefit this company" refferring to something personality wise what would I bring.

I know job interviewers love to ask crap questions like that, but it kinda took me off gaurd and I went into this schpeal about how "I have a love for technology and for this line of work, and with that... a strong desire to learn all that I can. That desire will keep me motivated to work my hardest and to continue learning about my job so I can do it the best that I can."

and his reaction was kinda like "ooooookay, suuuuure... whatever" type of a thing... On my way out to the car I was running through the interview in my head and now I think I didn't even answer his question at all the way he was looking for! I feel like an idiot

But what the crap are you supposed to say when they ask that?

:Q I didn't expect to see this thread again

but here's an update.

I didn't get the job, but I dont really care, because me and my buddy started our own business setting up peoples Christmas lights where I make (read, I take to my bank account) anywhere from $125-350 a job.

I'm also working as a pizza delivery guy for Pizza hut, and I average about $8.50/hr with tips.

Enthusiasm and a can do attitude. I will make things happen, not wait to be told what to do.

should've said something about being a person with an attitude and the skills to help the company achieve its mission.

email (or office if you don't have email) something like this:

Dear suchandsuch,

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today about the such and such. I learned such and such and blahdy blah.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

dugweb

keep it short and do it NOW!

(something like that; if you copy and paste it's not my fault )

I swear I think the entire preposterous "interview" process was invented to give HR people jobs... You're a fvcking on-site printer repair guy... what could they possibly be looking for in response to that question that would make a difference...

Beauracratic nonsense.

okay, here's what I've written.

Dear Paul,

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today about the responsibilities associated with working at the University Press. In our conversation I was amazed to learn of the amount of organization required to keep the University's printing faculties up and running. It sounds like a very exciting job, despite your attempts to play it down.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Doug Webster

Should I keep that last sentence in there? It might sound like I am trying to be a little too casual around him. (he kept saying how the job can get mundane, all the while he was telling me we work on the printers anywhere from the schools cafeteria, to the Presidents office which I thought sounded cool to see the school inside and out like that, so it's not a lie)

The dumbest thing I've ever said in a job interview is that I'm a genius(although I have no test results to back this up). I was trying to think of something original and humorous to say. I didn't hear back from that company.

I personally don't like interviews that open up with the question, "So, tell me about yourself." Such a pain to try and describe a brief history of your professional life in less than 2 minutes.

basically it's the same question as "what experiences do you have". just start with brief education and work, up to your last job. interviewer will surely ask more detailed questions.

good enough. as long as one is sent
I've had 2 jobs so far where the interviewer said they appreciated the thank you note so i always recommend doing that.

(yeah, i would have left out the "despite" line but i wasn't at the actual interview so if it fits with how the interview went then no sweat. and 'til you hear back.)

ok, with the what will you bring to the company type question, if its work based job then say something simple like 'i'll add to the decent and lively atmosphere whilst getting the job done'

if its a sale based job but low level then say 'i'll give a good face to the customers and do well to fit in with the team whilst hitting targets'

if its a high power sales based job then go all 1980's wall street 'i'm going to give to this company the dream i've held all my life, the desire to take all comers on in a glorious stand and never repent untill i hear the word yes.'
(or something similar...hehe)

Pizza, beer. . . I would have said "donuts". Hopefully he would have seen you're sense of humor.

But whats done is done, now keep looking for more interview opportunities!

I have zero time for sub-par interviewers...

"Tell me your background..."

Did you read my resume? Did you understand it? It's in point form... On to the relevant questions...
