If I'm so "stupid" on this, then the issue is simple and there is no controversy among professionals. But that isn't the case. The APA was asked to put "internet gaming disorder" into the DSM V and they declined to do so. That's because they have no idea if excessive time spent gaming is a disorder itself or a symptom of another problem.

They should ask China about that. They have actual programs over there for kids addicted to gaming.

the World Health Organization recognizes Gaming Disorder:

What is gaming disorder?

"Gaming disorder is defined in the draft 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as a pattern of gaming behavior (“digital-gaming” or “video-gaming”) characterized by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.

For gaming disorder to be diagnosed, the behaviour pattern must be of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning and would normally have been evident for at least 12 months"

Television has its own hooks. You keep watching to find out what happens next. When one episode ends, people will load up the next even though it's late at night. These days with online streaming people will binge watch entire seasons of shows in a single day. And there's at least 10x as many shows now than there was 30 years ago.

Average American watches 35 hours of TV per week. That's just short of a full time job.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_consumption

While with video games, the average person who plays them (not the average American) plays 6 hours per week.

Sorry, I stand by my statement that labeling excessive game playing as an addiction but not excessive TV watching is hypocrisy. For crissakes, "average" TV viewing is excessive.

Also, which activity is the bigger waste of time? TV is passive. Gaming is interactive and requires the use of your brain. Online gaming also has a strong social component that TV does not have.

It is excessive but most would not classify it as an addiction. With nothing to gain from watching TV it leaves little desire to want to harm others for missing an episode of The Simpsons. The people that join these types of competitions probably play 6 hours per day or more, not per week like a typical person. Their is a lot of gain from winning these. Fame, money, social status, etc. That can be addicting where one might lash out like this poor loser did.

The problem is that you need to play a lot to be competitive in esports -- you'd have to show that he was playing a lot because he was hooked, not just because he wanted to win. Occam's Razor suggests it's more likely that he just took the tournament too seriously and couldn't cope with losing.

That is also correct. My point was your less likely to find someone who is going to shoot up the joint because they missed a TV episode no matter how much TV they watch. But when you add in competitive esports and the like, i think youre much more likely to find someone come unhinged from losing. And i also think gaming can be way more addictive than TV is for all the reasons Woolfe mentioned.

Why is that an issue? Once again we see an unhinged leftist unable to cope with losing. This crap is getting old.

Where exactly did you get his political ideology from? Besides your ass, I mean. In fact, given that he had a pistol with a laser sight, the odds are higher that he was a right-wing gun fetishist than a liberal.

How many people actually get murdered over someone losing a video game? I could be forgetting something, but this incident is the first I've ever heard of it. As a reminder, "video games" have been around since the mid 70's.

Another white male snowflake who couldn't handle the fact that he was a loser. Someone probably said some mean words to him too.

Banning gun ownership by white males would immediately reduce mass shootings by well over 90%.
