My girl's card got hacked, and I would imagine this was the culprit. Sucks, but what an amazing hack.

On an unrelated note. I received my new chase card and when I called to activate, they said someone tried to charge it a day before and it was only stopped because of address mismatch. Told me throw that one away and they shipped me out a new one.

I went through and changed the PIN on my Target Debit RedCard, but their number was busy the last I checked, so I couldn't get a new one issued. Although, I'm not too sure if a thief is as concerned with a Target RedCard since they're only usable at Target's B&M and online stores. I did check both my bank and Target's online portal, and I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. When Target charges me, they list the Target store number, and it matches the one that I go to.

So either the hack is not as wide spread as the media is making it out or someone really did have an inside on the registers to put their own code. I am betting this was isolated to a few locations.

No idea but always use it as credit, sign. You can still get hacked but you should get your $$ back. You can also limit your daily purchases. The daycare was at $5K when it got hacked. They got better than $4K. Changed the limit to $1500.

Maybe these companies should invest in hiring some security personnel and buy hardware like firewalls and IPS systems and develop something to prevent this.

Reminds me - I don't know if it's just me but Target.com's website has been malfunctioning for me for the longest time. When in the cart, I can't do anything as the screen is grayed out with a loading symbol. Same for every single popular browser I have.

I shopped at Target for the first time in ~25 years on December 7th. Pretty shitty luck.

On the bright side, I recently set up passbook/mobile alerts so I should know if there are some fraudulent charges. Guess I'm going to have to put my vacation on the non-rewards card, though. :\

Well, I searched on Google for information on this, and this article seems to think debit cards don't get the same protection from fraud.

I didn't shop at Target in the past...several...years, but I'm now thinking about getting a credit card in the new year. I've never had one - only debit.
