I choose American.

You're a marketing victim of Walmart's old slogan to "Buy American." Yes, Walmart used to sell American made products... about 10 years ago. Now, they use their size and purchasing power to intimidate suppliers into producing goods in China, or they don't get to sell with Walmart. Highly unethical if you ask me. Why is a retail chain dictating where a manufacturer or vendor obtains goods?

Walmart has gone downhill since Sam Walton died... now the MBA's pray at the alter of the bottom line, while business ethics go in the toilet. I hope Walmart ends up like Enron.

It makes it a little easier job shopping a huge retail store when there are hot girls everywhere.

So did the term "Tarjay" come from people who want to believe it's more upscale or because there are people who are more upscale ? Or is it because they're french ?

I think Target is too quiet. I go in there and hear nothing more than footsteps and limited conversation. Just feels odd and kind of creepy.

I've noticed that Supercenters are cleaner and more presentable than regular Wal-Marts.

Walmart in the US just depresses the heck out of me. I'd rather drive 3x the distance (and I have to here in Manchester, NH) to get to a Target. Thankfully, a Target will be coming near to my apt.

Walmart in Canada seems to be a much nicer set of stores.

I make a point NEVER to shop at Walmart. Call me an isolationist, but a retail chain which strongarms it's suppliers to obtain goods from China is not helping our economy. I vote with my dollar...

So Target has less items from China than Walmart?

Nope

I would like to shop at target instead of Wal-Mart, but target is a much farther, more traffic congested drive. I can go to my mom's and start some laundry, go to Wal-Mart, go back and do another load, then go to publix, pick up laundry and go home in 3 hours.

Yes they also provide health insurance to all employees and pay more than the average wage for retail clerks.

I shop at walmart because It is three blocks from the house and my wife works there so I get 10% off

Walmart offers health insurance to all full time employees (if youve worked at a walmart for longer than a month there is ALWAYS a full time position open you can put in for), they also offer dental and life insurance, stock options, store profit sharing, rewards for accident free days, employee gift incentive programs, and competitions and contests. Walmart also gives regular raises based on performance.

Wrong! My wife is in retail management and she can attest that Target is no better than Walmart in treating their staff.

Wrong! My wife is in Target management and she can attest that Target is much better than Walmart in treating their staff. Benefits, hours, accomodations for employees, all of it is far better than Walmart. I've seen it first hand, having spoken with employees who left Target to work at Walmart and had nothing but regrets about leaving Target for Walmart. I'm curious to know what your wife's viewpoint is in retail management (ie.-who does she work for?)

I highly doubt the accomodations for employees, but the hours is likely true, overtime is not allowed at walmart.

Edit: and gee i wonder if there could be any incentive for bias from your wife no offense.

Target and Wal-Mart are across the street from each other here. I make a point to only shop at Target to keep my money out of Wal-Mart hands.

It seems we're both equally biased (our 10% off status makes us even though ). In any case, I've met with the regional management at Target, I've toured the farthest regions of several stores and even if all things were equal, the working environment (lighting, cleanliness, standards for product display, etc.) are far and away better than any Walmart store I've even been too, even our brand new Super Center that opened up here last summer when it was brand new. I know for a fact that Target pays their employees more on average and that their hours are managed better as well (my wife does the scheduling for her employees and is more than accomodating to individual needs and desires). I just can't fathom any area in particular that I would point to and say, "Walmart is better than Target" where employees are concerned.

I never shop at wal-mart, don't have any around 35 miles of where I live. I shop exclusively at Target for better layout, lighting, and hotties.

But, Wal-Mart is a lot closer here, so I just go there.
Yeah, it's half the drive to Wal-Mart that is is to Target. And gas isn't cheap these days.

Which French company is that?

Bahhhhh, I have been duped.

I apologize for my mistake. A little research would have revealed that Target is indeed and American Corporation formed by the merger of Dayton and Hudson corporations back in the 60s.

Again, I'm sorry.

That's OK. I'm glad you checked that out for yourself, instead of getting angry. I've actually heard the same rumor. That rumor, I believe, originated from an old (very, very old where I'm from) play on the store name, which was to pronounce "Target" as if one was reading French, ?Targét? (like "tar-jae?). Later, it turned into a joke (around here, at least) to call them Targét Boutique.

They?re American, and based in Downtown Minneapolis (they also have another building a few miles west of the downtown district). If you?ve been here, or seen any newer pictures of downtown Minneapolis at night, their new (in 2001) HQ building is the glass building with the top five floors lit up with all sorts of crazy moving colors.

I have mixed feelings about this lighting scheme. It sounds really cool, and it looks OK in pictures, but it?s tacky in real life. It doesn?t do anything for me, or the skyline, IMO. I?m used to it, though, because I live about 6 blocks from it.

I don't have a target anywhere near where I live and I don't shop at Wal-Mart for various reasons listed above. I did goto a Target once down in Atlanta and I found the experience 10x better then the Wal-Mart in our area. (which I am forced to goto sometimes.)
