Shopping in NYC

I'm looking for places to shop in NYC. I already have a few other NYC threads going but wanted a shopping specific thread so people will chime in as the other topics are not on this topic.

Anyways, the goal is to go shopping to places that have products that are unique and less common. Clothing is of little interest to us. Nick nacks and toys for our kids are more important. But we really want stores with things that are not common.

Anyways,
We are staying near Times Square so that area is covered.

I need shopping ideas for noon-5 PM on Saturday. Right now I have Kid Robot(118 Prince Street) as a must which is near Soho. So shopping ideas for near there are requested.

I also hope to hit up Giant Robot (437 E. 9th St) but that is not a must.

An antique book store would be interesting.

RESTAURANTS:
Becca - 355 W 46th St - Italian food (Times Square)
Sounds good but menu does not look very vegetarian friendly. Nothing really for my wife. She eats chicken on occasion but not often.

Tony's DiNapolio - 147 West 43rd - Italian food (Times Square)
A bit pricey but it looks like a nice place with a good menu for my wife.

Carmine's Restaurant - 200 West 44th Street - Italian food (Times Square)
Similar to Tony's in every way but I like Tony's atmosphere more (based on pics)

Chinatown is total shit. Check it out, but I would not buy anything from there. It's a fucking sess pool.

If you want stores that sell unique stuff, go to South America. You come to NYC, the only unique to NYC things you'll find are tourist shops that sell you statue of liberty figures. Otherwise it's just like any other city with your best buys, gaps, etc. What did you expect NYC to have that other cities don't?

In terms of high fashion, alot of clothes. That's under the things I care less about flag.

And I have been there just a few times. You live there? Really?

Anyways, can we get back on topic? You are welcome to leave if you have nothing to contribute in this thread. I actually have a question that I seek advice on.

Well what I was really trying to get at is that at least for me, when visiting other states in the same country, there really isn't anything unique you can buy that you can't get in your own city other than souvenirs specific to the city you're going to. You could go to the gift shop at the museums or tourism shops but other than that, I really can't imagine there is much to be had from visiting NYC that you can't get elsewhere. And considering you're not interested in clothing you've pretty much taken off the list the only thing I would consider NYC having more unique selection of.

Now when I visit other countries, there tend to be more things I would a hard time finding due to it's different culture.

FAO Schwartz is the toy store you're thinking of. it's right next to the big glass cube apple store at 59th and 5th ave which is just down the street from the Frick Collection.

You're thinking of FAO Schwartz....I don't remember it being anything special from when I went there as a kid, but I'm sure it was a good time. Others may disagree, but I'd say thats a cool place to bring your kids, but I don't know if its such a great/fun place to shop.

Whether you're a fan of Five Guys or not, there are so many other awesome options for food in NYC that this suggestion hurts me to think about. Maybe its meant to be sarcastic or a joke in which case I'm the fool, but really there's plenty of similarly priced and better food available in the city if you just look for it.

5 guys is about 10 minutes from my home where I live. Most everyone i know think it is overhyped garbage.

Now, a good Pizza place for lunch .... that's something i would like to know about. Somewhere between The Frick Collection and the Soho area would be great. That way we can walk it which is half the fun of being in NYC IMHO.

for quick and dirty you can get hot dogs at gray's papaya by NYU at 8th st and 6th ave. the recession special used to be $2.10 for 2 hot dogs and a medium drink. i prefer the orange drink to the other flavors.

other than ridiculous things that I can't afford, I can't think of much shopping that I can do in NYC that I couldn't do elsewhere or online (and probably more cheaply).

the only stores that I'll go to in NYC on a regular basis are Topman and Century 21 (Topman has an online store, but it all ships out from London even though they've got an NYC store, so it's faster for me to spend 5 minutes on the train + 10 minutes walking to buy stuff; C21 doesn't have an online presence and they're literally like 5 minutes from my office)

Actually, I'd like a nicer mexican restaurant for dinner on Saturday. Somewhere near Times Square. We are seeing Wicked at 8 PM. We don't drink so knowing that I am willing to spend up to $100 total granted $60 is preferred. A nice Italian restaurant would also work for the same price range.

Any advice on how to best use google local? Any way to limit search results based on ratings? Tips/Tricks to using it?
