I used to be 5'0 in 7th or 8th grade, and I had a lot of insults/jokes in middle school/beginning of HS. By the end of HS I was almost 5'9 and all the jokes/mentioning my height stopped. I really feel bad for how short people are treated

I'm 6'3", but I wouldn't mind being a little taller ... or at least just have longer legs (I have a short inseam for my height).

I feel bad for all the runts under 6'.

(Not that I really care, but hey, if the "short SOBs" get to bitch, then dammit so do I. )

I'm 6'5" - I share your pain.

Short people, imagine a world where owning a large SUV isn't a matter of choice, but the only car in which you can only marginally compromise your posture. Imagine a world where your choice in homes is sometimes curtailed by your height, since older homes often had sub 6'6" stairwell ceilings, basements and doorways. Imagine a world where tables are often too short for you (your knees touch the underside of the tabletop) and where it takes conscious effort to NOT physically intimidate the people you're first meeting. Boo hoo you say? It doesn't usually play in your favor in lots of situations - just as many, I'd wager, as the number of situations where it does.

Do you see us starting threads to bitch about it?

You can change height. Limb lengthening surgery can add several inches though its expensive.

I know the surgery you are talking about. The part of my body that did not grow enough are my femurs.

You couldn't pay me to have the kind of surgery required to lengthen my bones. It's absolutely insane to think that someone might even consider it for any reason other than for some kind of deformity.

Yeah, I always find it funny that someone will mention surgery in these kind of thread as if it's nontrivial. Aside the fact that it's prohibitively expensive, let's not forget that the healing process is excruciatingly painful, leaving you bedridden for an extended period. Impact to your overall athleticism? You bet. If you were getting shin splints before, magnify that many times over. That is assuming that you can even run at all. Add in the risk of complications...jeez I can't see why anyone would think this option is even viable.

My friends and I would joke about short and tall people equally.

But then again, we made fun of just about everything...

BTW, I'm only 5'8". A few of my friends are taller, but I do find that my height is about average.

5'6'' here. I don't carry myself very well, either, so I look a little smaller. At least I'm like a board, gotta love biking and rollerblading!

EDIT: Speaking of, how many of the ladies out there like the shorter guys?

My grandpa (mom's dad) was about your height and grandma was just barely over 4' tall. Their wedding photo is so cute.

You were tall compared to my grandma. She was 36" tall in 8th grade. She was thrilled when she grew a whole 3" the summer before high school and was 3' 3" as a freshman.

You guys are probably thinking about the traditional method (Illizarov), using a screw and rotaing it everyday. However the newer methods of inserting an internal device to lengthen your limbs such as Fitbone has been documented to be much less painful, have less potential for complications, and the recovery period is extremely faster. Bedridden for an extended period of time...Maybe for like only 2 weeks. You can be on crutches within 1-2 weeks with partial weightbearing. Weightbearing on crutches requires at least 2 months. Of course you're gonna lose athleticism in the near term but talk about 5 years down the road after surgery is completed, I don't think you'll notice a difference unless you're playing pro contact sports. I believe prices are around 40k in germany for fitbone and cheaper in thailand. Not too expensive if you're in desperate need of some inches.

Short....heh, when I was in 8th grade, I was still shorter than a lot of the 5th graders, and I'm the tallest in my family.

That said, when and if I ever do date anyone, I hope they don't mind the height thing. I know thaty it doesn't really concern me.

I don't think you ahould talk about the subject as if you knew alot about the subject.

Complications- In some of the more refined Institute, complications are zero to none.
Out of 1000 cases, you might get 1-2 complications but they always fix it.

As for as Athleticism, we're not talking about professional athletes here. we're talking about short people.
Its like saying if you broken a bone, you lose your athleticims...its simply untrue.
Its just take a while to get back to 100%....2-5 yrs down the road.
Just depends on how hard to work on getting back to normal.
Athletes go through worst injuries and they are able to come back 100% playing again.

The bad part about it is
1) Yes it is expensive. If you don't have at lest $30K to spare, don't even think about it.
Not only that, you will probably won't be able to work for 6months-2 yrs depending on what kind of work you're in. That alot of loss income.

2) Yes, it is painful. No other way to put it.
You're leghtening your bones and the muscles and cartlidge, etc...has to leghten with it.

So no, if you're like 5'6 and taller, no its not a viable option.
For shorter people under 5'5, those extra few inches make a world of difference.

Yes, some girls have no problem going out with short guys but in general girls do not like short guys.

Height was never a factor for me when dating, at all. I dated guys shorter than me, my height, taller than me, it had no bearing on it at all. I have plenty of friends who are short and married and they never had problems getting dates. I imagine most women are less shallow than you think they are.
