Shot of whiskey every night?

If I were to take a shot of whiskey every night to calm the nerves, how long before I would be considered an alcoholic?

Just one shot? I would not consider that to be an alcoholic at all. More than 4 shots/beers a day? Then you "might" have a problem.

I know an old rancher back in my hometown that starts his day off by taking a shot of whiskey, every morning.

Well..if you are drinking to solve a problem..prolly after the first week when it is a bottle a night.

I drank a lot in college, haven't had a drink in 4 weeks till today when I knocked back two shots. For the next 6 weeks I'm going to be under EXTREME stress, and I'm thinking a little light drinking might be the only way for me to get through it without a heart attack.

I used to not drink, but after getting into graduate school I have been drinking every night. One drink a night should be okay, some people say it is good for your health.

Stress and anxiety can probably take a much worse tole on your body than a single shot a day ever would.

I think you're fine with one shot. If you did limit drinking, perhaps one glass of red wine each night would be great. I believe it helps prevent heart attacks. I?ve read similar articles on beer. A Mediterranean diet is supposed to be healthy.

I've heard the same thing about red wine.

LOL, that reminds me of somthing I saw this summer. I was at a Rite-Aid in Long Beach with my GF and we see this lady there with a whole shopping cart filled all the way to the top with nothing but gallon jugs of Vodka. Well, not entirely with vodka to be truthful. She did have three boxes of Honey Bunches of Oats Now there's someone with a problem. She was in the middle of picking out ice cream when we left. I guess you need something to soothe the stomach after all that alcohol...

I've never heard that before, but I like the theory. Alcoholism, as part of its definition should contain something about destroying lives? That's my take on what you said

What if someone went to work everyday, never had typtical alcoholic family/gambling traits etc etc, but drank a 12 pack after dinner daily?

IMO they're still addicted to alchohol but I leave it for the rest of ATOT to discern otherwise.

If you are taking it to "calm the nerves" then you have a problem. You are using alcohol as a medication. Shouldn't you be easking yourself why your nerves need calming? Maybe you are depressed, or eating an unhealthy diet, or need more exercise, etc.

OK you reminded me of something I saw in Mexico 15 years ago in La Paz, Baja California. Booze used to be cheap in Mexico, I'm in CCC (a large supermarket) and this elderly couple ( Americans) are pushing around a large shopping cart with a mountain of assorted hard liquor in it. Holy Crap!! I hope such is not the case in my retirement. I do blame governments for creating the problem by overtaxing liquor. I was hitchiking with a lory driver in the UK. I said I was going to the continent. Suddenly he became very excited and said, "You can get drunk there for $5.00 a day." I thought I hope I never have to think like that. I've seen people come from places where liquor is banned and they drink 24/7.
