Should a tower fan blow in our blow out?

Sure it matters...one setup will blow air into the case, the other out. Try it both ways and see which one results in lower temps.

Good rule to go by is that fans on the front should pull air in so it can pass over the components, then have the rear fans pushing the air out. Top and side fans can go either way.

I prefer to have more air being pushed out than in but there's nothing solid to support that.

Yea, i agree. However, if you have more exhaust then you are pulling in air from non-filtered inputs (i just cleaned my main input and still have tons of ****** inside my box). I tend to think that equal in, equal out is best. If you OC this may not be the answer.

Running an Antec SLK3000B with side duct, two 120 mm x 38 mm Panaflos/two Zalman Fanmate 2, and one Zalman 7700Cu (120mm fan). Have negative case pressure at low to moderate load (CPU fan OFF). Above 40C, the CPU fan comes ON at 970 rpm and the system is running with positive case pressure.

Current room temp is 68F. CPU temp is 31C. Max CPU temp is 46C. The PC is inaudible at 1 foot distance. CPU is an overclocked Sempron 3100 Paris with 1.54Vcore at 2.42GHz.

I have the same set up except I have the side fan blowing in and the top fan blowing out. It's always preferred to have the top fans blowing out due to the fact that hot air goes up and cold air goes down. Another setup to consider is to make sure you do not short circuit the air path, i.e. if the front fan is blowing in and the side fan which is about the same level and is blowing out then you have a shorted air path. Meaning the air is not circulated properly.

I like top to be blowing out as an exhast fan. I prefer the side to be blowing in. THe back to be the variable.

My Lian-Li's all blow in from the front and blow out the back and top, so I don't have to fret.

I run negative case pressure, with the pressure exiting the side. Air enters only over critical components. I mounted the PSU externally and tested this setup and it worked great. Just find what works and stick with it. Some situtations lead to unique approaches.

Test a few different setups and stick with what works, regardless of the common consensus. On my wifes setup, positive pressure, with ducted fans worked best.

The hot air rising factor is negligable, any fan will more than compensate for it. A second vote for "mess around with how you've got it set up and see for yourself".

I've got negative pressure in both computers, mostly because the noise path is so much shorter/more direct from those fans, so i just turn up the exhaust fans a bit instead.

Hi, Cooling is best done by moving the air into and out of the case as rapidly as possible. Equal in and equal out or as near as you can manage should be best. Luck, Jim
