Should doctors in the US really be making up to a million a year??

In most countries that have universal health care, like here in Canada, doctors do pretty dam well. I can tell you my family doctor is pretty well off. And specialists do even better. But it's true that they don't make as much as their counterparts in the US. Though it's true that they have higher expenses in the US. I was looking at this survey of US salaries for physicians:

http://www.allied-physicians.c...physician-salaries.htm

I'm stunned at the MAX salaries column. Up to 1,300,000! I know expenses are higher in the US but still!!

Note: I'm not arguing that doctors salaries should be drastically cut to save expenses. I'm just shocked at how high these numbers are. The real solution would be in eliminating the entire medical private insurance industry (or almost so). But that's sadly not on the table.

What's the median and average salaries, and maybe the standard deviation as well? Those numbers are just being sensational without more information.

There is such a wide range of doctors that you can't simply look at a mean or median number without breaking it into sub-categories... for example a dentist versus a pediatrician... completely different fields, but still both classified as doctors.

My guess is that these are average salaries in each group. I remember reading somewhere that the average salary for physicians in the US averaged over all doctors was something like $200,000.

I'm not looking at the lower or even the median. I was looking specifically at the high end and the specialties that make the most.

Doctors have to get years of expensive schooling and deal with expensive insurance costs. This is a case of supply and demand where there is great demand for doctors but not a large supply. We can also ask should football players be paid so much?

Well the insurance costs could be solved by tort reform. And I would say the cost for schools should fall under the public sector to some degree too.

The OP should have asked should bank CEO's and insurance company CEO's make 20 million/year at least *most* doctors services are value added.

Should children die in this world because they can't afford to pay the money million dollar doctors get?

The answer to million dollar doctors is grinding out doctors by the millions in doctor mills with education paid for by the government and job security for life in government hospitals run like the military.

And we see the level of respect that soldiers get from liberals...

Are you going to spit on your doctor too?

When men and women have the power to save lives, who's to say that their salaries are ever too high?

Artificial salary caps, on any profession, are not a good idea.

Republican's respect soldiers by sending them to their death in an illicit war.

i find myself agreeing here... if the govt is going to be as involved in healthcare as it is, it should start growing the resources... there has to be some kind of control (you can't take govt training then leave govt service)... at the very least there should be a military style academy to produce nurse practitioners (corpmen) to staff clinics... talk about something that would drive down costs...

Get some new material please. One would think that sending troops to be blown apart in another country that posed no threat to us would not be considered "showing them respect." Why did Bush hate the troops?

Many countries have programs like this. The Gov will pay for med school and in return the doc will have to work at a state hospital for x amount of years on the cheap.

Including the US. You get your schooling and board "paid" for in exchange for work. It's how my mom became a doctor. A poor single mother with an infant became a doctor. Talk about a great country.

Anyone who makes money at the top end is a genius in his or her field. If someone needed extraordinary skills to save life or limb, they sure wouldn't complain that the best cost a tiny fraction of what many baseball players earn.

In a Republican majority Congress...Democrats couldn't have stopped it if they tried. It is sort like what the Republican's are bitching about now for any piece of legislation that passes through Congress.

I?m always surprised that people think all doctors become one simply because of their profound love of helping people.

What's interesting is the concept that they shouldn't be compensated for their extraordinary efforts because if they are, it proves they don't care about their patients

If people are willing to pay for it, yes. If not, they won't.

Any figures on what it costs these Doctors for malpractice insurance?

I can about guarantee those at the top are probably surgeons. I bet they pay a pretty penny to protect themselves from the trial lawyers that so heavily support the Democratic party.

Just a thought.
