should HBO have waited for GRRM to finish writing Game of Thrones before filming?

Yup, that's what I figure... though I don't watch GoT at all so my opinion may not mean much. I imagine they can do the show at their own pace now, then if Martin finishes the series they can go back and re-do the book versions. The only problem is by the time that's all done they'd probably need a whole new cast.

IMO Martin won't live long enough to finish the series anyway, so it may not even matter.

But no, HBO had no choice. They can't put the series on hiatus until 2025 when hopefully GRRM will have the series finished. They're going to have to trust to the stupidity of the average viewer and hope that most of the viewers won't notice or care how ridiculous things are getting.

HBO should just pay GRRM to get in a room with the show producers for a month and have them work on a script. GRRM could then ah heck off and do as he please for the rest of his life.

I think you're giving the books too much credit. Up to book three it's phenomenal. But the diminishing returns after are readily apparent. The last book hardly knocks your socks off. If that is the material the show was basing itself off one could argue the Martin jumped the shark before the show did.

Dorne was much better in the books.

I couldn't stomach watching another episode after that fiasco in episode 1.

I completely agree that AFFC and ADWD were a big step down compared to the brilliance of the first three books. GRRM admits that he had a problem with the characters being too spread out and that he needed to start moving the pieces around the board to get them gathered, so the pacing suffered. Not a whole lot happened and a lot of the time the story didn't progress very much. It was bloated and meandering and the two books should have been pared down into one decent book rather than two sub-par books. But it all made sense. The characters acted, for lack of better phrasing, in character. They all had their own motivations, their own agendas and their own world views and they stayed true to themselves.

Now they've gone off the rails. The story is moving forward in places, but none of the characters are acting in their own best interests. They've all lost their reasons for their actions and it seems like they're just doing things randomly because that's how they're being written. Each week the characters do things that are stupidly out of character and the following week they do things that are even dumber because the writers are trying to scramble themselves out of the corners they keep painting themselves into with the original dumb things.

i find the exact opposite to be true, most people i know watch GoT and none of them watch BBT.

personally, i have been enjoying this season of GoT.
