Given the quality of the storytelling and writing, yes. Since they've lost the books things have turned to shit and it gets dumber and dumber every week. It's quickly becoming as bad as Lost.
But no, HBO had no choice. They can't put the series on hiatus until 2025 when hopefully GRRM will have the series finished. They're going to have to trust to the stupidity of the average viewer and hope that most of the viewers won't notice or care how ridiculous things are getting.

I think you're giving the books too much credit. Up to book three it's phenomenal. But the diminishing returns after are readily apparent. The last book hardly knocks your socks off. If that is the material the show was basing itself off one could argue the Martin jumped the shark before the show did.
