I work at best buy and we're tring to get rid of some old laptops. I'm in the market for one but this was seemed intresting. I sell laptops/desktops there, but I've only been there a month and a half. Also these will be my first laptops, I'm not sure what the hot deals (not best buy deals) are for laptops. I've been more into desktops but laptops are looking good to me now. What do you think of these two?

Gateway 4540gz
Intel Pentium M 715 (1.5Ghz - 2MB L2 cache)
512MB DDR RAM
80 GB HDD
CD/DVD writer
15" Ultrabright TFT
5.5 lbs

$620

This one would probably go to my sister who's a sophmore in college.
The other one is:

Gateway 7422gz
AMD Athlon 64 3400+
1024 MB DDR RAM
80GB HDD
CD/DVD writer
15.4" Ultrabright WXGA
ATI mobility 9550
7.5 lbs

$700

no, just because you see a sale on 10,000 dildos, doesn't mean you should buy them. You should only buy things if you NEED them.

The 2nd one looks to have good specs, but I wouldnt get the first one. Better yet Id just save up the money combined from the 2 and wait for a G70 Go lappy or something where you can kill some games on.

I guess what I want to know is that can better deals be found? And also are those fair prices for the technology or should I just bide my time?

I am not at all in tune with laptops, but my sister and I both feel like we could use one each. Both in college - my senior year - her sophmore. I wonder if I can turn up some CS:S action on that last one when I want to take a break in the library after 3.5 hrs of study with another 3.5 to go.

I would buy the second one but not the first one. You can buy a really cheap Dell with Celeron for the price of the first one if all it's going to be used for is college.

Office Depot in the Sunday paper has a brand new HP Sempron 3000+, 256 MB, 40 GB, wifi-g for $499 after rebate

Not as nice, but a warranty and not beat up

Definitely, Centrino is better than Celeron. It all depends on how much you want to spend and what it will be used for.

Dell owns Gateway, no worries on them going out of business anytime soon.

My sister want's something that will last and do basic average user junk. But she also wants good battery life that the Centrino can afford her.

I on the other hand have two options: a) a straight up school machine or b) a gaming rig that can do school too. I'm leaning towards the former as I find it really hard to do anything on my desktop because of limitless distractions.

Do you think that Dell will go on a coupon splurge anytime soon? The 700m looks so sexy. I'm just not sure of it's pricing.

they sound really fscking good for deals.

And dont diss gateway.. they make solid laptops. They may not be as popular as dell but frankly they are much better built and their tech support is in teh US and very fast.

After 2 years I needed to send it in for a few minor things and they as a courtesy replaced all that needed replacing even stuff that didnt need replacing.

Now that's service.

I'm looking into dell setups. Also the best coupons I can find are 35% off $999. Anyone know if the $750 off coupons will ever find a way back?

hahaahh NO. emachines and gateway merged which is why they are now sold in retail stores like best buy, circuit city, etc and not gateways store. Dell does NOT own gateway. and those are very good deals on both of those laptops. the 9550 will run most modern games at lower resolutions.
