I'm expecting a GTX will do that. I'm just taking a guess that the FPS will be roughly equivalent to CoD2 as far as resolution/settings go. Let's just hope Oblivion is better coded; however, after Morrowind, I'm not holding my breath.

wait the 6 weeks for the G71's to come out to see if it is much better than the new ATI or the 7800, if it is then get it, if not then save some $ and get the 7800gt or the new 1900.

As long as X1800XT and 7800GTX card are not discontinued, theoretically speaking neither of those cards can hover at $549/499 MSRP or $450-460 street prices. So there is a potential for those cards to fall about $100 in price as new high-end replaces it. As far as 7800GT goes, it doesn't really have a lot of room to fall. With that in mind, even if X1800XT and 7800GTX cards are going to fall in price and we were certain that would happen, it is hard to predict if this fall will occur in 1 week or 3 weeks or 1 month.

I agree with most here that the 7800GT will stay in the $250-300 range for a while, but what will change in that price arena is that ATI may finally have a model that competes at that price.(maybe an x1700XT ?)

Whether it will be a little better, a lot better, or worse than a 7800GT, I haven't heard much about.

My suggestion is to wait, but not for the 7800 GT to fall in price, but for the 7900 GT

Yep, a $350-400 card that meets or exceeds a 7800GTX 512 is worth waiting for IMO.

is there any word on a MSRP for the 7900? you can't even get a 7800GTX 256 for that low of a price.

I am waiting until Jan. 24 to see if ATI has the X1900XL widely available for $350. But I highly doubt it.

But as long as a 7800GT can play BF2, Far Cry, and HL:Source at 1600x1200 with 2x or 4x FSAA with playable FPS, I'm happy.

Again, it is all about timing. You have to look at how well the card will play the games too. I see it's all about getting best b4yb, but you also gotta think that the games will begin to surpass the current hardware in order to meet the standards of new cards. I understand it's not going to happen in 3 - 6 months, but if you're going to wait as long as it will take for the GTX to come down to 250-300 range, in order to get a GT for sub-200, the games that come out at the release of the next "champion" will be designed to run optimally on that card, and may have moderately poor performance on the current high-end cards.

What I'm saying is IMO, if what you want isn't going to drop in price within a month ( as in nothing new is going to come out ), then it's pointless to wait. Although at this point in time, you may want to wait just a few weeks..

No, you can't but I'm expecting the breakdown to be something like this:

7900GTX launch MSRP $600-650, street price after a month or two $450-550
7900GT launch MSRP $500-550, street price after a month or two $350-450

It really depends on availability, but if the 7900's aren't available the X1900 will be...

This is so easy I'm surprised so many are getting it wrong.

Your current card is sufficient for what you're doing, the only thing you're to upgrade for is Oblivion. So you have no immediate need for the 7800GT. Computer parts do not go up in price. The 7800GT could conceivably not go down in price much if at all between now and Oblivion's release date, but it certainly won't go up. So, why in the HELL would you buy it now? There's nothing to gain.

Hell, oblivion might even get delayed again...then you'll have really screwed yourself. Or maybe when Oblivion is released it will be revealed it requires a GTX to play worth a crap. Probably not, but who knows? Bethseda has been pretty tight lipped about system requirements, and speculation is just speculation.

Watch hot deals and wait. Don't make the same mistake I did back when I bought a new video card in fvcking october to play oblivion with. Do you think I'm playing oblivion now? No. I just screwed myself out of some money is all.

Vendor prices for the X1900XT are listing on pre-order for around $560.

This card destroys a 7800 GTX 512 (The $1000 version)!

So yeah, expect the 7900 GT to start out around $500 and then get into the $350 range by the time Oblivion ships. You'd probably be better off with the ATI X1900XT though if Oblivions graphics take more advantage of how ATI is revamping their card with a huge increase in shader processors (48 vs 16!) as I suspect it will rather then simply a faster version of a 7800 as Nvidia is making.

No, they're not. But I don't think there are going to be any SM4 games until 2008. It's 2006 now and there are only a handful of SM3 games out.
