Should I buy a laptop in America and send it to Australia??

OK I'm chuckin a shit here. You wouldnt believe how crappy Aus notebooks are compared to wots available in the states. I've looked at every single website in Australia and nothing looks good.

So my question is, Has anyone ever brought an American laptop to Australia? What type of problems occur from doing this?? Is it worth it?? Will I run into problems with power adaptor, wireless, etc.?

I can get an awesome laptop like this one here on newegg for $899, but I look for anything similar in Oz it costs about $1999!!

With no experience in shipping goods to foreign countries I feel fully qualified to answer some of your fears.

Possible issues with your "customs" department though just about any retailer that will ship to you will most likely not have much trouble with that.

The included power adapter will most definitely not work. Your plugs are different as is the common wall voltage. You may be able to buy a replacement power adapter for your laptop manufacturer. Or you can really hack it by purchasing a US->AUS travel power converter\adapter and always use that to hook the PC to the wall.

As far as I know wireless\ethernet is a global standard and should have no problems with either of those, though their may be an issue with modem standardization (if that matters to you).

Ok, so now my inexperience is REALLY going to show.

WHy do I care about a modem?? Isn't a modem just for a dialup connection? If so then I don't care. But if its needed for broadband or DSL then yes I care!! lol

yes the modem is for a dial up connection, pretty much any laptop comes with one. I don't think newegg ships outside the US, unless they started recently I don't believe that's changed. You could probably find a retailer that does however. Only thing I would be concerned about is the customs duties, as kub mentioned. I have shipped to Canada and not had problems, never sent anything to Australia though.

The A/C power brick will work just fine - I use mine all over the world. Anything from 110 to 240 VAC, 50-60 Hz. All you need is a cheap plug adapter.

If I lived in Australia, I would shop in Hong Kong or Singapore.

If you carry it in, you put it on your customs declaration - Aussie rules apply. It is then possible "used" equipment. If you have it shipped it - that could be a few dollars more.

As for the dialup modem - who uses them anymore?

Plus you need to consider that the warranty may or may not be honored in Australia. I am certain HK or Singapore will be cheaper.
