Should I buy an M4?

We want to do European pick-up this summer. Should I get an M4 or wait until the M2?

Another option is the M235i which felt lack-luster. Either way i'd have to sell the STi, Miata, and Forester. Just trying to decide what to replace it with.

Euro pick-up for the M4 is around $58k. M235i is around $42k. Might as well spend the extra cash and get a proper M car.

Or put a few grand into the subaru?

I hear that the Hawaii dealers are assholes when it comes to ED. Better scour the 'fest for it.

I'm not sure what made you think that the M235i is lackluster, though. I thought it was a total blast.

I'm waiting to see what the M2 brings before I pick my next car. ATM It's between a new M2, New Gt350 or a Used 911S/GTS.

What are you looking for in a new car.

Trading those 3 cars for ANY car would be a mistake IMO. Miata is a great track car, STI is a nice little pocket rocket and Forester is great for offroad/hauling needs.

What exactly is the end goal/purpose you have in mind.

Almost seems like you are into this "delivery thing". You do realize you can take a trip out there without buying a car right?

PS. New BMWs, especially M4 do nothing for me. My favorite M is still the E30, followed by E36 and 80s M5. Those were the days when I used to turn head and admire these cars....they hit my heart.

Miata is cheap track car and you can't compare an STI to an M4 or 235 for comfort or driver engagement. The older BMWs Ms are nice little cars, but on a technological scale they're not even close to a new M4

To you "technological scale" might be a pro....to me it's a HUGE con.

Don't forget, German auto makers have a LONG LONG LONG history of poor electronics.

And now days, they put more electronic crap into their cars then EVER before.

So good luck to you and your technology my friend.

OP, if you do get this car, get rid of it before the warranty is over. These are NOT long term cars. And the reason why I would never buy one, cause I keep my cars for LONG periods of time (15-20 years).

No, I'm not poor.

Give me millions and I would not buy such a car. These cars swallow wallets within 5 -10 years of ownership. If you have deep pockets and it makes you feel good, be my guest.

Cars are 2nd biggest purchases people make and today these cars are more disposable then EVER before.

So if you want to drop $50k on a car and do it every 3 years. Go nuts.

Whatever floats that boat.

Nobody thinks with their wallet when buying luxury cars....that's what a luxury is!

You can say that and it is the truth.

Mostly because we have 2 in the family and I work on them and see how "great" they are.

I wouldn't recommend a BMW to my enemy.

its funny reading bimmerfest and such websites to see the stuff people go through to justify their vehicles. the N55's HPFP crapping out randomly and dropping it off at the dealer is an acceptable problem to many of these people.

There is so many examples I've seen just by doing routine maintnance and fixing with BMWs like above....

E92 Fuse box.....WTF where they thinking?
Welded radiator sensor that goes bad......needs radiator replacement or CEL (which you wont' pass emission with)
No dipstick

I can go on and on....

These cars are designed to HAVE flaws.

Damn, I wasn't aware of the N55 having HPFP issues too. The N54s have been resolved since 2011 or so. My 07 had the HPFP replaced 3 times, last in summer of 11. Other than that I haven't had any mechanical issues with it.

*knocks on wood.

While everyone who hasn't had one wants to complain, my 07 335i only needed HPFP once including running extra boost from a JB4 for 20k miles (and the following owner had no issues either for another 25k). My M3 was in the shop once for a non maintenance item and that was because I had a choice between being rear-ended, hitting a bus, or taking a pot hole at 65mph. The pot hole won.

I'm not going to pretend it is a Honda, but in my experience if you take care of BMWs they take care of you.

I have a hard time keeping a car for two years.

If you're replacing all of those, I don't see how the M235i (or M2) makes sense. Seems like you'd need to go M3 so you can have performance and doors.

Personally, I wouldn't get an M4. I agree with getting a proper German auto, like a 911. Or, if you want to be a bit more practical, it would be acceptable to get a Cayman.
