Wife dropped her iphone 5--cracked screen.

Get iphone 6 or wait 3 months for 6s/7??

Any earthshattering new features??

Thanks

Your wait will be 4 months.

iPhone will get 2 GB of RAM this fall. Some here will say that's worth waiting for. I personally don't see it that way. Other than force touch, a better camera, and faster processor, it shouldn't be much different than the current lineup.

I suggest she purchase now.

wait 4 months, and 6+ will be cheaper. But in 4 months a lot can happen...

The regular iPhone 6 is a top notch phone. The new one will be like 30% faster probably with twice the ram, but that matters less with the 6. I think you should go for it.

If we were talking about a 6+ that is a different story. I would do everything I could to wait for a 6+S in that case.

Get screen repaired on Craigslist, wait for new iPhone. It's supposed to be a nice improvement.

iP6 & 6+ may be getting more ram, better camera, force touch, newer cpu & gpu's.

I would give her the option, but if it were mine I'd wait for the new models.

I would repair screen (ifixit.com). I'm about to replace the camera in my iPhone 5. Phone still works fine, but I have replaced battery and screen in the past. I'm hoping to make it to 6s or 7 if possible.

The -S models have all been badass in my opinion. The 4S and 5S were huge upgrades in hardware.

The rule of thumb for iPhones is to always buy the "S" model. Especially with new designs as it gives Apple a chance to shake out the bugs. My 4S is still a great phone.

To answer the OP's qustion, I'd wait. A new display is $50 and they're not too difficult to replace for anyone that has electronics experience.

I wish Apple would follow the same design philosophy with the iPad. The iPhones are pretty easy to fix.

Get the screen replaced for 75 bucks and then get a 6s in September.

Yup. I think it's silly to buy a 6 at this point. The guts of the 6S are going to be quite killer and offer a much longer lifespan than the 6 will.

I think its silly to wait for the new iPhone. 4 months is an eternity. Live TODAY. Tomorrow you may be dead.

Once the new one will come out, you will sell yours and buy the new one. You will spend maybe $200-300 extra. Yes, it's not a small amount but it's not that big either stretched over 4 months which will be more like 6 months actually because you will not be able to get the 6s when it comes out. There will be delays, out of stock, shipping delays, etc, etc.

Angry rant below:

Also, there is no excuse for dropping your iphone. If you drop your expensive phone, clearly you take too much for granted. People in a third world country can only wish they had what you got! And you go and DROP your super expensive fancy device... Shame on you.

What happened to buying a case?! Oh... you thought the case was too bulky? You thought it decreases the overall look of the phone? Well... Too frigging bad! Now you got a broken piece of junk.

And what happened to paying for a warranty on your phone? You could just have it replaced for $100-200 with a brand new one. Didn't want to pay for a $7/mo warranty?

What the hell is wrong with you?! I mean seriously... I never, ever, EVER cracked my phones screen, and I owned many, many phones. You know why? Because I actually care. Because I value my belongings. Because every dollar I paid for my phone, I earned with very, very hard work. It didn't come easy to me. I had to "really" work for my money. That's why I cannot possibly crack my screen. It cant happen. No way, no how.

Karma is a bitch. I predict you will shatter your screen within the next 4.68 days.

If it were me I would wait mainly because when the new one comes out I would have that all to familiar "dang, look what I could have had if I waited" feeling. I suppose that's why I have been sitting on my upgrade for something like 1.5 years now. Which is a little bit silly.

I am waiting to see if (a) a new Nexus 5 comes out and (b) if Verizon gets it. If not, I might very well go for the 6s myself. I like my Note 2 a lot, but I'm tired of being told I am in a city 150 miles away from me when I am at home. I have a feeling that is a Google thing and will follow me when I upgrade to another Android phone.

And this is assuming you'll get the next iPhone at launch. Like prior launches, unless you preorder within 5 minutes or willing to line up, you won't get it in initial shipment.

iPhone 6+ with 1GB RAM is a crime. Terrible phone. Avoid like the plague (and I say that owning one).

I disagree. I don't have any ram issues that cause me problems. I'm sure it would be better off with two but I suffice with one. Granted it rears it's head the most with several tabs open in the browser but I rarely use it, spend most of my time in apps.

OP: I'd fix the screen and wait for the 6S at this point.

"I don't have any RAM issues, except I do experience the RAM issue in the app that most iPhone users use the most."

Why do you say that? I agree that 1 GB RAM is a crime on the iPhone 6+, but I wouldn't call it a terrible phone.

Are you running into the performance issue some are reporting? If so, that may not just be RAM, but may be more related to SoC performance.

I don't own one though. I've just played with one a bit.

The problem with the 6+ is more than RAM though. It is also the fact that it has a lower power-per-pixel than the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 5s. That 6+ is just begging to be the next iPad 3, aka an iDevice that starts acting sluggish before devices that are older than it. Even Admiral Ackbar would tell you that 6+ is a trap, a way to capture iPhone users who want a Note-sized screen DESPERATELY but doesn't know what the term "SoC" means. The 6+ guarantees that an iPhone 7 has a built-in install base, aka all those "normal" users who find that iOS 9/10 makes their 6+ run like a dog. Otherwise a iPhone with that big of screen could be "good enough" for many people for a long time, and Apple's shareholders can't have that.

OP only mentioned a 6 and I think with that 720p screen the 6 can be a good phone for some people for years. Depends how much you use a web browser on a phone, I know personally I couldn't do 1GB of RAM but many could. But that 6+ with its 1080p screen combined with iPhone 6 level guts shouldn't be bought by anyone that knows what a SoC is, unless they are SUCH an enthusiast that they will have a new iPhone this year anyway with a 0% chance they hand-me-down their old device.

Well, I agree with most of the above except to say it performs good enough at least with iOS 8.1. I wouldn't recommend it either, but it works OK. Or at least it did in the brief times I've had with it.

Will it be the next iPad 3? Maybe, but I'm thinking not anywhere near as bad.

I will likely be buying the iPhone 6s though. Not the + for that either, just because I prefer smaller phones. Or maybe I'll just keep my 5s and only get the 6s for the wife. She currently has a 5, which works fine, but the 16 GB storage is limiting.

Oh sure, it does fine with iOS 8.1. The issue is the next version. Or just the fact that as soon as the 6+s with 2GB of ram hits the phablet formatted apps will expect that.

Will it be the next iPad 3? Maybe, but I'm thinking not anywhere near as bad.

I don't think any iDevice will ever be that bad again. That thing was an absolute bomb. With that said, the 6+ could easily be the worst iPhone ever. We will see in a few years.
