Should I buy Morrowind/Oblivion?

Morrowind is on sale today on steam for $5, and Oblivion GOTY for $6.24. Normal Oblivion (presumably without the DLC) is $5.

Anyway, I'm wondering if it is worth it to buy one or both of these games. I have Skyrim, which I really, really enjoyed - even without mods - but I'm curious as to whether these games are still worth playing with Skyrim around. Of course at such low prices it's hard to go wrong, but what do you guys think about Morrowind and Oblivion compared to Skyrim?

Also, has anyone found that playing Skyrim ruined Oblivion or Morrowind for them?

Oblivion is great, maybe it would been better to play it before Skyrim (for example, graphics may appear outdated). I am still playing it.
Of course, mine is single opinion, check out the metacritic if you don't believe me.

Shudders... I spent over 300 hours probably on both Morrowind + Oblivion each -- explored almost every nook and cranny plus the expansions. Still wouldn't go back without a gun to my head. They "fixed" so many things in Skyrim, it's not funny.

Morrowind is one of the greatest RPGs ever released and worthy of a look. That said, graphically it can be a huge step back from what gamers are used to today so it might be hard to get into. As for Oblivion, still a great game but in my opinion a bit meh compared to Morrowind. Imp is right about Elder Scrolls evolution though. The formula works so much better in Skyrim.

I would have liked Oblivion a lot more if your equipment didn't keep breaking. Yeah, it makes the game more challenging, but it's still a big annoyance of mine in more traditional WRPGs.

Oblivion is the worst of the latest 3 ES games, the expansion was better than the game itself. Morrowind was probably the best at release, followed by Skyrim.

The experience will not be the same as it would playing these titles at launch.

I only played Skyrim, it was fucking amazing.

Never played Morrowind or Oblivion, but I'm 100% sure that anything Todd Howard makes is epic. Skyrim is what all games should be like.

Pretty much my experience as well, despite the fact that a lot of people say Morrowind is a great game. I tried to start Morrowind 2 or 3 times and just could not get into it. I liked oblivion, and Skyrim is one of my favorite games ever.

I liked Morrowind the best, mainly because I spent too many hours trying to find everything,it also does not have sat nav like the other two ie you have to discover where quest objectives are at yourself so requires more patience and gives you more of an achievement when you do find them,an arrow telling you exactly where to go is kind of very boring and lets be honest what accomplishment is that?

If you have Skyrim, then no.
Skyrim is all of those games and more.

I'm not saying they are bad games, in fact, they were epic when they were released much like Skyrim was. But Skyrim just makes them obsolete. You have to mod those games to make it closer to Skyrim type quality, and then you get crash bugs galore.

Just save yourself the frustration.

Morrowind and Oblivion run on the Gamebryo engine, which is notorious for crashing on multicore systems. This was back when most PCs were single core, though the problem still wasn't fixed by the time Fallout 3 came about. Probably why it had so many issues on the 360 and PS3 as well. To fix the crashes, you have to mod the ini file and set the processor affinity to use two cores tops.

Skyrim and Oblivion/Morrowind are certainly two different games. The latter two are traditional action WRPGs, while Skyrim is an action-adventure game with RPG elements. If you're looking for a more Skyrim like experience, try picking up the Witcher 1 & 2.

You had to use your imagination a lot in Morrowind.

One of the worst parts of Oblivion and Morrowind was the recycling of dungeons. There were a few unique mines/forts/gates and then there were 10x that with nothing but the exact same crap. Unfortunately, it was difficult to tell which was which, so I cleared every damn one out and humped every damn valuable piece of loot back to town to sell.

And then I accidentally deleted by 150 hours of progress in Skyrim... Luckily, I was done by that point.

Yeah, Bethesda has a way of putting up huge degrees of polish between games. Morrowind and Oblivion are good for getting to know bits of the ES universe story and the exploration, but expect the gameplay to be hugely different. Morrowind is 99% text-based and has slower movement over land (at least initially). Their philosophy of skill leveling differs between each game as well.

Speak for yourself. To me Oblivion > Morrowind >>>>>>>> Skyrim (removing spellcrafting from the game makes up for 7 of those '>')

I ended up buying both of them, I figured it's only $11 and I may or may not enjoy them. I've certainly been interested in trying them for quite a long time. I've also enjoyed more traditional RPGs such as KOTOR.

Also, I did already play through the Witcher 1 & 2 - I haven't done Iorveth's path in 2, only Roche's, but I'm planning on returning to them shortly before the release of Witcher 3 where I will play through Iorveth's path.

DITTO. W1 has a wonky combat system, but the story is great and sets up W2. Looking forward to W3.
I Played Oblivian and enjoyed it, did not "over mod" (need unofficial patches at the minimum) and had no PC crashes on Win 7 64. However, it is an older game, so graphics are not up to today's standards. Highly recommend Shivering Isles expansion.

This is the group rebuilding Morrowind (and Oblivion eventually) to the Skyrim engine.

This is why I just purchased Morrowind. I didn't play it when it was released.. I think Dagerfall put a bad taste in my mouth. However, with Skywind to be released at some point in the future, you will need Morrowind and the expansions in order to play. I would grab it for that alone.

I got Morrowind for free with a video card I bought way back when. It was my first RPG I think, and it was a lot of fun, but there were a few quests where you just had to walk halfway across the map to talk to some guy, and I got bored with it.

One of the worst complaints about Morrowind, IIRC, was that you became Jesus Christ himself around level 20? Think I got to at least level 50 with my characters.

Oblivion tried to fix that with the scaling, which made things stupid. At some point, I want to be able to hack through everything like butter. With the scaling in Oblivion, it took way too long mashing keys to take something weak down.

To the subject of the thread, yes, definitely. If only to have the game files for things like OpenMW or SkyWind.

Thats a common thing in all Elder Scrolls games. After a point, you're basically a god. See my further comments on Oblivion.

Oblivion's scaling was utterly broken. Build your character 'wrong', ie, if you leveled your character with non-combat skills, you became so gimped that you almost couldn't progress. Multiple characters of mine ran into this, and I had to reroll and start a new character.

Obviously I am speaking for myself, who else would I be speaking for?
