A good set of home speakers will make even the best "pc" speakers sound bad, most people I know plug their computer into their existing home stereo if they have one, A suitable set of sattelite speakers and a home theatre style active sub *will* cost you more than a typical pc system, but the sound quality improvement will be worth it.

Depends how much you want to spend.
A set like the MidiLand S4/8200s or the VideoLogic Sirrocco Crossfires are really good speakers for a really good price.

But if you get a high quality amp with a 12" sub and nice big fullrange speakers for the 4 corners, a heavy duty center and wire in an SPDIF cable from your soundcard, there is no hope in hell a set of PC speakers will ever touch it. But they will cost alot less.

There are many sets of PC speakers that are a great 5.1 or 4.1 setup for the money, but if you are willing to spend there is no way they could match a home theatre system.

Even a little shelf system from AIWA or RCA or Sony will mangle most computer speakers.

I have a cheap pair of "120w" amplified computer speakers for my computer. They suck, yeah, but for "PC" speakers, they aren't too bad, considering how much I've beat them up (hehe, first day.. can u say max volume? ).

My computer is in my room, as well as my stereo system... One of my speakers is dead, but the one that remains just completely blows away my computer speakers, even though it's 20-30 years old and home-made. Home theatre systems blow away any computer speakers, no doubt about it. Spend $7500 on that of course it will blow away your $800 computer speakers.

I am using my Aiwa system with the 60 watt Aiwa sub. It is "dolby digital ready" with the six channels of analog input for the left, right, center, rear left, rear right, and sub so I assuming that if I get a new SB Live Plat 5.1 card I can make use of all the channels and listen to DVD's in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.

OK,

Im gonna buy a SB Live! 1024 card (not the plat.version).
Im NOT gonna pay a fortune for speakers....

Would I be better off by buying the Creative FPS 1000 speakers with four satelites and a sub, or should i buy a pair of stereo outfit speakers for approx. the same price as the FPS system??? What would get the most out of my sound card and give the best sound???

Any answers would be very appreciated!!!!!

Just hooked up some Klipsh ProMedia v.2-400 to my SBLive and this thing rocks the house. For less than $400 you can have the best sounding PC without external stereo components, PERIOD!

Lombardaga, I think you are missunderstanding a crucial point here when comparing "PC" vs. home stereo speakers. You can not simply buy a comparably priced set of home speakers and plug them into your PC. What causes the PC speakers to seem so expensive is that they are "powered", they have an amplifier built into them to power them. If you use the home stereo speakers you must run the line from your PC into an amp or receiver first. the home speakers will then be driven by the receiver or amp. So, for what you would spend on a decent set of "PC" speakers you could probably get a better sounding/quality set of home speakers, but then you gotta drop a little cash on a receiver or amp. to drive the home speakers. And in order to utilize the full capabilites of your sound card (assuming it has 4 speaker support) and effects like EAX or other environmental audio effects like offered from aureal cards you are going to have to spend a fair amount of $$$ to get an amp./receiver with that supports digital input or at least dolby surround. IMHO unless you've got a WAD of $$$ in yer pocket, just get a nice set of "PC" speakers and you will be happy.

The diff:

Computer speakers (even the BEST) are budget quality with built in amplification...

Stereo speakers require external power source and are "usually" higher in quality and performance.

It's all in what people say OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER>.>

"How much money do you want to spend"

ALL the money in the world will not buy any kind of "computer" speakers that will outdo what you could get in a stereo shop. period.

Apok, my sub will eat yours
4 12" in two push/pull pairs, powered by a 2x250 W amp
Not that I can use it to more than 40% of its max power or so though, or it will start shaking stuff down from the shelves in my room

Sheesh, I don't see how you guys can drop hundreds of dollars on a stereo system for your computer. I have a $50 generic 4.1 setup and the bass is loud enough to disturb the whole house if I wanted to. I'm sure you can get a 100W sub with five times the bass, but why? It will totally drown out everything else, probably give you a headache and destroy your hearing, not to mention the neighbours will be giving you the cold shoulder for weeks!

No thanks, I'll be just fine with my $50 20W sub

I think PC speakers differ in respect of Magnetic shielding. I'm sure we all know that magnets + computer or monitors = BAD.

Modus, I didnt buy the stuff I have primairy for the effect, but rather for the quality.
The sub I have now is WAY overkill for most stuff in terms of effect, but the sound quality is amazing, Im pretty sure its quite a bit better than any $50 sub.

Wasnt that expensive either, got a really great price on it, $300 for the sub and amp, if I had bought the parts myself and built it it would probabaly have cost more than double that, I dont know how the guy could sell it that cheap, but Im not complaining

Of course, I dont expect you of all people to understand my argument, since we all know you're about as big a cheap-ass as one can be j/k
