Something about the cartoony graphics and fast-paced action just turns me off

Thats not the first time I've heard that. Kind of overwhelming for noobs (not that you are) but also kind of seems like everyone is ADD - too much going on. I can see that.

For me, the cartoony graphics and the fast-paced action made the game that much better. After years of ramping up the gritty realism in FPS, TF2 was just so different! Fast, fun, and over the top violent. I still laugh while playing the game, something which I can't say I do often playing CS or DoD.

Another great thing about the art style they went with is that the game will never look "old". It looks like an R-rated Pixar movie. Other games that go for realistic graphics end up looking quite aged after a few years. Not so with TF2.

Oh and don't forget about the continuous updates. I have not seen any other game that has gotten so much post release content that's all FREE. The head of their L4D team could stand to learn a few things from the TF2 team...

I wish I could get into TF2 like I can CS:S, COD4, L4D, and similar online FPS's. Something about the cartoony graphics and fast-paced action just turns me off.

I've put about 10-20 hours into it just trying to warm up to it, but it just doesn't feel right. It looks like a great game and I love the versatility of the various classes, the use of teamwork, and especially the constant content updates. It reminds me a lot of Enemy Territory from back in the day, which was insanely fun, but just not quite the same.

Maybe I just need to play more or stick with one of the classes I don't enjoy as much (heavy, solider, scout) to see if I warm up to them as I get upgrades. Spy was the first class I tried and still my best, but I'm not a horrible pyro, engineer, or sniper either.

Still can't hit $#!& with the bow, though. The sniper rifle seems so much easier.

CoD4 is fast paced if not faster paced. CoD you get thrown in immediately into the action.

The game has a white bread feel to it.. Maybe it's the crits, or that it's often more rewarding to grind. One of the developer interviews stated it best.. they designed the game to force fast action, with easily breakable defense.

I play it, but it's not something that I enjoy as much as other games. The original TF was fast paced, but much more balanced between defense and offense. It is fun though, but in a quick sugar fix kinda way.

Like many said before, take advantage of the free weekend and decide. You'll probably end up buying it tho.

I disagree. While there are some maps that are stupidly fast-paced (primarily because of grenades) like Shipment and Wet Work, many maps have decent layouts which give you avenues to sneak around the main fighting force and come up from behind.

When I'm just going for kills in a Team Deathmatch or Domination round, I can jump around like a crazy fool with a P90, going after opponents as quickly as I can find them and easily end up with a great KDR. For tactical rounds like Sabotage, sitting back with a silenced rifle is far more rewarding.

Sure, you can sit back in TF2 as a sniper, picking off people as you please - but you seem to be far more open and unprotected than COD4. There are less places to hide, and anywhere with a window is generally easy to get to anyway.

I don't mean to be comparing TF2 to COD4; they're vastly different games. However, I do wish that there were some drastically different game modes in TF2 to switch it up. That's just my preference, though.
