Hi i'm looking at upgrading my old geforce 4 mx440 card cos i can't run anything anymore lol.
I'm aiming at a High- mid card, something to last around one year and not too expensive, but not cheapo.

So anyways my friends' been telling me about the radeon 9800? is it any good? should i go for XT or pro?
can anyone recommend any others?

i play mostly fps like doom3 , hl2 etc.

Thnx

a 9800 pro is a good choice, you will probably be able to flash to XT, possibly on stock cooling if you get one with a good heatsink and fan. a 9800 XT is nice because it has an extra 128 megs of memory, which will come in handy when playing with high resolutions and newer games that flaunt textures. i love my 9800 pro. =D

THIS dominates the 9800xt, if you're gonna shell out $300 for a 9800xt, get this instead, as it's cheaper, and it absolutely SMACKS the 9800 series around.

How much are you looking to spend??

If your going to spend $200+ on a 9800XT you might as well get a Nvidia 6800 (not the GT or Ultra just the plain 6800) you can find them for about $250 on the web. I just picked one up for my friend to replace his 9800pro, & was suprised how much better games ran on it over the 9800pro.

The 6800 is a fantastic card, better then the 9800pro or 9800xt, if your willing to spend $250 its well worth it.

If your looking to spend less then, for sure go with either the 9800pro or 9800xt you cant go wrong either way, I used a 9800pro myself before I upgraded to 6800ultra.

Don't get the XT... i don't know why 9800 prices are still around 200 when all the new cards are all out already. hell even a 6600 would make more sense now...

Yeah, for $200 go for a 6600 GT, though you might have to wait a week for the prices to come down. As great as the 9800 series is, I couldn't reccomend it until they cut the prices because the Nvidea cards are better for about the same price. 9800xt might be the worst bang for the buck in DX9 cards.

alright so you're saying geforce 6800. btw u guys quoting in us dollars?

couple of other questions:
* does the actual brand matter? (not the chipset, i mean, like power color, sapphire etc)
* the 6800 is only 128 mg. any advantage of choosing 256 card?

thnx

Only if it's a 6800 or X800 series, I've heard that 256 MB on anything else is a waste. The extra RAM will allow you to play games at higher resolutions and be able to turn all eye candy on.

The 256MB on the 9800XT is pretty mute, seeing as how the architecture of the 6800 core is far more advanced. In other words, the 6800 can make better use of the memory it has, and you'll see in benchmarks, that the 256MB the 9800xt is equipped with, doesn't help it very much.

I haven?t heard anything bad about any of the current manufactures, I have cards from both EVGA & BFG and they run perfectly.

Cards from BFG have a custom cooler, which looks pretty cool, compared to EVGA which has a basic cooling solution.
