Should I cancel my RX 580 order?

So, my aging HD7950 kicked the bucket last night; I'm currently running on an HD6850.

I placed an order for an 8GB RX 580 today, but when I got home, I see the news that AMD is rumored to be releasing a 12nm Polaris refresh next month.

Granted it will be annoying to use the 6850 in the meantime, but an extra 10-15% above the RX 580 would be nice if I can get one for the same price.

So, what's your opinion? Stick with the 580 or cancel the order (it hasn't shipped yet) and wait for more news?

What if the rumor is just a rumor? I think probability of 12nm refresh is like 70% only. That's just my estimate.
AMD should go for 12nm if 7nm gpu won't have a replacement for Polaris level gpu for long and they use GDDR5X or 6 on 12nm, otherwise it'll be bandwidth starved.

I agree, we don't know much about the next AMD cards yet. You found a good deal on a good card, I would stick with that, at least for now.

What do you even do?

Are you a gamer?

Are you a miner?

If your a gamer, honestly you can pick up a used 1080Ti from people dumping them for fairly cheap.
The 1070ti's are even being heavily discounted, and that would be worth the extra investment.

What exactly do you do and are you a bit flexable with your budget?

Most used GTX1080Ti will cost him double the new RX580 8GB he found.

I think they are averaging anywhere from 400-500.... so maybe a 1080ti will be a little steep.

But i see new 1070ti's for 370-450, which isnt far from the 250 for the RX 580, if gaming is important.

The RX580 he found cost 240 and although the GTX1070Ti is faster, you are suggesting to spend at least 55% (240 vs 370) or 87% (240 vs 450) more for a used card.

you know what i didnt realize the RX580 was that low of a price...

I was assuming it was closer to 300... so i guess i see your point.

Interesting rumor. Wonder what launch MSRPs will be? I paid $150 or so for my RX 470, back when they were fire saleing them for RX 570 intro.

Maybe the same thing will happen when RX 670/680 comes out, and I will be able to pick up 14nm RX 570/580 for $150 or slightly less? That would be pretty sweet. Then again, so would 12nm for mining. Sigh. Decisions.

Sorry, I suppose I should have explained more.

I'm a moderate gamer, but most of the games I play are older (currently playing FO4) and I'm on a 1900x1200 monitor. I'm not looking for high end; I have never been able to justify spending more than the $200-250 range. Basically, I was looking at 580s and 1060 6GBs.

Thanks for the offer Larry, but I tend to buy new because go for a long time between replacements and I worry about the fan wear on used cards.

Seeing as it's just a rumor, I'll probably end up keeping the order (but end up kicking myself later ).

I would just wait it out for the next week or two and get the next best thing!! The RX 680x or what ever they are gonna call it will run circles around a RX 580.
Its not just a refresh, its a small refinement going from 14nm to 12nm and I hear they will be using GDDR6 this time around.
So expect a 25% performance increase or more!!

I would stick with that 580X at that price, because that's a really good deal. That is actually a pretty solid value card for AMD this generation (really only the 580/570/480/470) in their respective classes, are good value cards. Still, they are rather power hungry.

I'm a bit pessimistic about the possible interim AMD consumer cards over the next year or so, even considering a possible Polaris refresh within the next 2 months really being worth it. So, my thought is to stick with the 580 and by the time AMD is back in the game, it will basically be within your typical hardware replacement schedule anyway.

Then again, since you are on a 5-6 year refresh cycle, why not wait a few more weeks to make this decision?

So, basically, I am completely useless.

I'm not seeing how this is a good deal pricing wise, that to me seems like carry over thinking due to being conditioned to inflated mining prices. The RX 580 8GB's launch MSRP was $230. Pcpartpicker for the US shows 3 at $240 and 1 at $250.

Unless you're worried about US tariffs affecting the price even with no RX 6xx series the odds are the prices of existing RX 580s will continue trend downwards particularly towards Black Friday. The potential tariff impact though makes the situation a bit less clear.

Amazon.com is 30 days returns right? You could just keep in unopened even (to avoid abuse), that would give you a buffer to see how the market trends (overstock vs. tariffs) or if a new release occurs.

I sold my RX 580, I'd hold onto that HD7950 a bit longer for the RX 580X (or whatever it will be). And as others said, 1070, 1070Ti,1080 and even Vega 56 are selling really cheap right now, I picked up a 1070Ti a few weeks ago for a steal.

He games at roughly 1080, with no plans to increase his resolution. a 580-class card would be more than adequate for him, and he's not paying more than $250, or so he says. Plus, his 7950 is actually kaput, as stated, so that doesn't really help.

These were almost my exact thoughts.

In the end, I cancelled the order. I figure waiting a week or two for news won't kill me, and I can likely find a similar deal if the rumors don't come to pass. And, if they are true, I won't be saying "what if" for the next few years.

Cancel and wait seems like the logical solution too me.

Hopefully some news will drop in your patience time frame. I'm sure a similar or even possibly a better deal will come around later if you so choose.

Waiting as tarrifs work their way through the system may not be the best option. Current stock would have been imported pre-tarrif. New stock will cost 10% more for distributors. You can expect them to pass that on.

The rumored card is just 12nm refresh of Polaris. It's unlikely to offer even 10% improvement. This is really just a process tweak.

Yeah that and they may be using GDDR6 which will also bring a pretty hefty gain as well..
I think this surprise launch will be just that, a surprise!!
Pretty sure they are trying to compete with the GTX 1070 with this refresh this go around.
Really hoping all these rumors are true and if not hey a 10% or 15% improvement would still be pretty great ini my book.

Ebay having a 15% off coupon code tomorrow. I picked up a new evga 1080 gtx for $365 last time. Way better than a $250 580.

I'm actually more interested in the process tweak for the lowered power draw but even that may not be 10%...

As for the tariffs, I hadn't considered the spin that puts on things. It certainly tightens up the timetable for my decision to within the next week or so.

My budget is pretty firm at ~$250 max, so even 15% wont bump me up above a 580 or 1060 6GB, and also means I have to buy from Ebay. It may be paranoid of me, but I don't like buying electronics from them, as I feel I need to have a lot of trust in the seller. With Amazon for example, that's not a problem. The few extra bucks buys me peace of mind.
