Meh, you don't wanna be a code monkey anyways, very few people ever got rich on their ability to program C++ might not seem like it at this point, but people who can program are a dime a dozen. Its like a foreign language, once you get it suddenly its no longer worrying about every little piece of syntax or line of code and you can write lines of code as fast as you can write lines of an essay. I mean I was programming a microcontroller for my senior project class this morning, wrote 600 lines of assembly code in 2 hours, thats a line every 12 seconds (including debugging by actually writing the FLASH memmory on the microcontroller and running the program), might seem crazy for someone in freshmen level programming or something, but you'll reach a point where its second nature. I would just gather some of your classmates were big time programmers in high school and were already familiar with programming comming in whereas you had forgeten it since apparently you have benn away from that for awhile. IF programming is what you like doing them just stick it out, you should never let one stupid class determine your future unless you have decided on something else that interests you more.

ok well cs32 is one of the basic core classes for cs, so if you're not enjoying it or doing well u might wanna consider changing your major. specifically, what's the problem in the class? is it coming up with algorithms for your programs or is it integrating all the stuff u learn like data structures?

my main question is as follows. how's everyone else scoring on the midterms and quizzes? with the cs classes at ucla, i've found it doesn't matter if u get a 50% on the midterm. it only matters if everybody else got below or above the grade you're getting. everything's relative in ucla science classes.

also, ask yourself if you're enjoying what you're doing in class regardless of how you're performing. if you are enjoying it, stick with it. go to office hours and get some help from the TA and profs with your programs if u need to boost up your grade.

Go to the TA or professor or one of the "nerds" in class and ask what the fuck you're doing wrong. Otherwise, if you can't get an A in a basic CS class, I'd change majors.

i was walking home then i realized something. Com sci, is not like any other engineering major. Even though it's considered engineering, You actually need alot of practice and be ready to learn new stuff all the time. I'm comparing CS with Civil Engineering or mechanical or Electrical, those field are not that evolving, so your basically good to go after school. Just a though, I might be wrong since i dont know Jack shi* about civil/mech/ elec technologies...
I'm beginning to get annoyed by my own posts, change your damn major already!!!
THE PAY IS GOOD THOUGH!!! and there is always a job for computer scientist

I would acutally think CS had lower pay and less job security than many of the other engineering disciplines (not bad, just not chemical engineering for example).

check out monster.com for computer science jobs.
well most of them are looking for people with 3 yrs exp. in php and apache and mysql related coding and servers. but it's 80 - 100 pay yearly.

the job market for computer scientists, especially in the bay area, is astounding. Companies everywhere are hiring, and the jobs most recruited for on campus are software engineering positions.

If you like your major, keep at it. You said you just transferred to UCLA. It sounds like you need some time getting used to the intensity of work at a larger university. With CS, its pretty much going to be goodbye to a large part of your social life. CS is arguably among the toughest majors throughout most universities.

yeah gotta agree with this post. the jump from community college to university is really big, so you might just not be used to the competitiveness and intensity of courses here.

although CS i've come to notice is hit or miss most of the time. some people can code up nice algorithms naturally, while other people can stare at the screen for a couple hours trying to grind out simple recursive programs.

OP u might want to look into other majors in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering. they still offer a bit of programming integrated into the curricula if you wanna stick with some programming.

heh...I was a Business IT major all through college, and it was funny watching more and more friends drop out of CS and into the business school!

I feel like I'm competing with the wrong breed.

Your power level is only 5? That's so far from 9000, how do you expect to compete with the standardized nerds?

There's another way he could "boost" his grade. but that generally works for chicks. he could try though. ;P
