it looks like it was relatively new carpet. my agent said he recommended all his clients to change the locks and clean their carpets before they move in.

should i do it and, if so, how much should i pay? it might be more for sanity/peace of mind than anything.

this is my first place so i've never cleaned carpets ever. i could, alternatively, use the money to get a dyson.

lots of ppl must have came and looked at the house.... doesn't hurt to get it cleaned once. Never buy carpet shampoo/steamer etc. are are waste of money, much economical to rent.
You can rent it and clean yourself

Is the property a rental? If so then recommend the most thorough cleaning possible (steam/chemicals).

If you own the property then recommend you pull the carpet and replace with wood or tile.

Carpet = a trap for everything disgusting

it looks like it's newer and so i want to get some use out of it before i replace it. plus, it's one less expense. i still need to get a bed.

i'm probably going to have someone come do it this time, if i do it. if i rent a cleaner, i'll probably mess something up or shrink the carpet.

one guy quoted me 35 cents a square foot. he seemed really nice but for that much, i think i'd rather sleep on "perhaps" dirty carpet. i have too much anandtech "hot deals" in me to pay that much.

We had a local company do our carpet a couple of weeks ago, and it was $189 for the entire house (2 floors, 3 bedrooms, living room, family room, and long hall).

I like hiring people with truck mounted cleaners to do the carpet. Truck mounted vacuums suck so much more out the carpet that they're almost dry when they leave. One of the reasons that carpets get dirty is that the remnants of soap are left behind from previous cleanings and this attracts dirt. I use Stanley Steamer, but get prices from others and get them to price match. You'll get it done for half the price they first quote you.

We had our 4bed rooms, 2 living rooms, long hallway (2000sq ft) done by ppl with van system for 100$. I checked PennySaver and the cheapest was 50$ for the same number of rooms.

+1 to doing them professionally and not renting.

We have rented one before and it got out some, but was a huge pain in the ass, ended up costing quite a bit after buying shampoo and the cleaning materials, and still looked like crap.

Did it once with chem dry, and it looked ok and smelled pretty.

Did it with Stanley steamer the next time, and my god the carpets almost looked brand new. It really doesn't cost much and is definitely worth it.

We purchased one for less than $200 over 5 years ago and still use it regularly. We still use the original soap bottle we purchased at the same time because you only need to use a little bit to go a long way. Its nice to be able to spot clean heavy traffic areas like walkways every now and then and not the entire home.

ours looks like this but this one is less than $150

thats why after you shampoo it and suck the soapy water out you should go over the carpet once again with just fresh water.

I even used tide one time and the carpet smelled great.

the hoover ones that just use fluid are about a 100 bucks. if you have pets they are a life saver.

and yes, you have no idea how much dirt you can get out with a carpet cleaner...its so gross.

bingo, rinse and its good.

steam is probably more effective, but that costs more.

We used Stanley Steamer when we moved in. It ended costing more than the online quote (you can go to their site and get a quote) since they consider the stairs separate. The carpets came out nice but they try to sell you a few extras. One mistake was having the basement done. Their machine doesn't completely dry the carpet. The basement was left with a musty smell. I had to borrow a few space heaters to dry it all out. Upstairs was dry in a few hours.
