Should I even consider a P3/1GHz + RDRAM + i820?

Someone offered me this possible deal:
$250: Pentium 3, 1 GHz, slot 1
$120: 512MB (1/2GB!) of RDRAM (don't know the speed yet)

So for me to make a system out of the above, I'll need a slot 1 motherboard that can use RDRAM. I came up with the Aopen AX6C-L, which got pretty good marks, only costs about $110, but is somewhat old and uses the forgotten i820 chipset.

I know that the prices are pretty good, but... I can probably get a faster Athlon for less but then I have to get DDR memory instead. The major love and hate of this deal is the memory: the price is great, but it's RDRAM! With RDRAM, I either have to go with a P3+old slow chipset / motherboard or the hideously-expensive p4+new faster chipset / motherboard. Do I need to get RDRAM in pairs? Any advantage to go with the i840 chipset instead (I know it's way more expenive)? Too bad there aren't any Athlon boards that use RDRAM (when hell freezes, right?

And are there 512MB RDRAMs? Maybe it's a pair of 256MBs and that wasn't translated well down the line...

Maybe I should forget all about this and wait for the xbox. And please don't ask me to sell you this stuff: it's through a friend of friend of the family so I like to keep my life simple.

Thanks!
Bobby

Well it's probably PC600 Rambus which is about as fast as PC100 SDRAM...slower than PC133 anyways...

No in the i820 you don't have to install it in pairs, that's i840 and i850.

$250 + $120 + $110 = $380

On www.pricewatch.com

An MSi K7T Pro2A is ~$120 (including shipping)
2 x 256MB Micron PC133 is ~$200 (including shipping)
A 1 Ghz Athlon is $176

is $496 total.

so it's $116 more for the Athlon system with 512MB of SDRAM. Of course you could knock off $92 and have only 256MB and you'd proably be fine most people don't need more than 256MB

I'd find out what kind of Rambus that is. If it's PC800 it's probably a pretty good deal..but if it's PC600 I wouldn't take it...

Take the ram for $120, sell it on egay to some poor sucker, then take the money and build yourself a good AMD system.

Take the whole offer for $370, sell it on egay to some poor sucker, give the poor sucker the link to this thread, then take the money and build yourself a good AMD system.

P.S.

No, not when i815E and KT133 with SDRAM solutions are highly affordable with better performance.

Perhaps the reason they are selling it for so little, is because it sucks. They're probably just trying to sell it while it's still worth a few dollars.

this looks rather biased stuff, folks.
the real question is whether that RDRAM will work with the P4. If it does, it might be a very good deal. Although if you have to buy another matching one new then that will be extremely painful...

Wow, look at all these AMD pushers. What I say is to get the stuff, at least the cpu. Those are good prices. You could just make a system out of it and sell it for big money. It would be quite a profit and much more than selling the parts separately on egay

DANG! Those are good prices, hard to beat that my friend. And you guys do know that a P3 1GHz is faster than an Athlon 1 GHz right ? Yes, I know, they make Athlon 1.2 GHz's which are faster but more expensive than this deal... hmm tough one dude.... !
