Should I get a 9600GT for $164?

Any solid word yet on how the 9600GT performs compared to the competition? If I wanted to get it, I could probably buy it for somewhat less than the $220 retail by asking someone I know who works there.

I don't think they are worth $220 from a performance standpoint.

Maybe $175ish.

yeah, $175 is probably the top end to pay for one of those right now. They're in between 3850 and 3870 performance wise it appears; 3850 is 150-160 right now and 3870 is 200. also, 8800gt is 200 or even less for off brands.

Lol, listen to this man. Your friend isn't really your friend

The 9600gt looks to be a great card, but not $220 great.

the OP didn't say that his friend wanted to sell it to him for $220, he said that he could buy it for LESS than $220. isn't $164 less than $220? how is his friend trying to make a profit off him when you don't know what the actual proposed price (if any) was?

If you play the latest games, you probably want to get a 8800GT since games are already starting to strain on it.

Well you can't expect all retail stores to have the same prices at all locations, different locations have different demographics and therefore price certain things differently (also there was that whole issue about BestBuy lying about prices through each store and their website as well). Anyways the 9600GT isn't meant to be a new high end card, its the newest top of the line midrange card, and from the performance its almost like an 8800 GT (but for the price you can't complain if you're on a budget). I now wish I bought an EVGA 8600 GT so I could step-up in any case I'm waiting for the 9800 GTXs.

Yeah, I'd be able to get it for $164 with the discount. At that price, the competition seems to be the 8800GS and the 3850/70 (depending on if they lower prices more soon).

Wow, that's going to be an awkward conversation.

Could be because the OP asked if he should pick one up for $220. He didn't say his friend would discount it for him. Why would we automatically assume he would? I would think the friend might want to save any discounts for himself. Or, as a BB employee, once you give your friend a discount, he will always want a discount, and that might become a problem.??

Yes, why should we assume the OP would get it at a discount? Because we need not assume, the OP says they will (probably) get it at the discount and later in the thread the OP verifies the $164 price they'd pay. Maybe you should read the thread keys.

For $164 it might be worth it. However, if you don't really need the upgrade, it wouldn't hurt to wait. I.E., you already are getting good FPS on decent quality settings on games you play.

excellent catch, I was about to say the same but you beat me to it.
The friend isn't trying to sell her on a 220$ 9600... it retails for 220$ and friend gets it for less...

I have been to best buy and they did not have a single modern card...
The 9600GT is between a 8800GT and a 3870 in performance in MOST tests (it varies) from the FEW (so its not certain) previews out for it...

So its a pretty good purchase at 164$

Ah, quite right, my apologies. And yet Bryans post was before it, I read that first, and posted on IT.

Seriously, the fact that this midrange card is performing with the middle line high end cards is something that I find nice, but like taltamir said its a nice price for the card if you're paying $164, otherwise wait for the rest of the 9 Series to come out. The 9600GT wasn't meant to push the 8800GT down the list, specially seeing as how the 8800 GT came out quite recently, X600 = midrange, X800 = high end. Simple as that, so stop saying to get an 8800GT already, in any case I find the performance the 9600GT can give for $30-40 less for the OP is quite nice, I thoroughly look forward to the 9800GTX launch.

Add on: And seriously could everyone please read the fact that the OP is NOT buying it at $220, but at a discounted price of $164, which for the performance/price is a better ratio than any 8800 GT out there.

If you can find one at this price then I'd say definately get it but the cheapest 8800GT I see currently is $214. The OP might want to wait until March when more in the 9series are due out.

Sorry for my ambiguous OP; I wasn't actually sure about the discount when I made it.

So now, the 9600GT for $164 vs the 8800GT for $200, I can't decide.......

The 9600GT for $164 out the door is a great price. It is a few paces ahead of the HD3870, and even almost matches the 8800GT in performance.
