You've never used one, have you? I've had mine for three weeks and it's the fastest laptop I've ever used. It runs warmer than my 700m did, but nowhere near hot enough to cause problems.

Am I the only one who finds it disturbing that people will sacrifice operating temperatures for looks? If the laptop runs hot, it just isn't fscking worth it, it probably means it's going to consume more power than it should as well. My IBM laptop or any IBM laptop infact has never had heat issues AT ALL.

The heat is completly based on the specs of the laptop. I am pretty sure your IBM lappy does not have a fast GPU or a hot running processor. In fact I bet your IBM lappy is about 1.25" thick.

My wife's macbook does not run hot at all. I have a Ferrari 4005 and it runs hotter than the macbook. Even when I am playing a game on my Ferrari it doesn't get so hot that I can't put it on my lap. The first round of macbooks did in fact run hot and they had some issues; however, Apple has pretty much corrected the problems and the current macbooks are very nice notebooks.

Oh yeah, and the comments before about the Macbook Pro's being over priced is not all that fair. In Apple's price you need to look at the software that comes bundled with every Mac. Yes, mac's are more expensive than other computers but I guarantee you they are cheaper than buying a Sony or IBM.

I have owned an IBM, Acer, Mac, Sony, HP, and a Gateway so I have plenty of experience with laptops. The only laptop that I think can compete with the quality and price of Apple is Asus, but even some of their laptops have been known to have little quirks.

Right because Intel GMA is far more heat intensive than A Radeon 9600 pro in my T42  In laptops, I'd say more than 50% of the heat is from the processor then GPU, then again because the Apple OS is GPU accelerated, it's more likely to run hot for daily tasks. Nonetheless, when playing farcry on my laptop, the underside is ambient, all the heat is where it's suppose to be, the vent. My sister's Dell 1.6ghz PentiumM 600m laptop runs hot as hell, sure it wasn't like that at ALL when we first got it but overtime it got hotter, if the apple laptop is hot now, I can only imagine what will happen to it later..

Oh and btw, it's not 1.25 thick, it's 1" thick, thats including the screen too!

My cousin has a PentiumM 600m, and it doesn't get very hot. I hate my laptop though, HP zv5000, with Pentium 4 3ghz. Gets SUPER hot, and it recently melted the plug on the charger.

How old is your cousin's 600m? My mom's 600m doesn't get hot/overheat since hers was made in '03, I've noticed that the '04 models and on have been suffering this issue, same with all other dell models:frown: My sister's 600m was made in '04 and when we first got it I don't believe it ran hot but then one day it overheated, replaced the motherboard and now it just runs uber hot..

Yeah this HP is a pos laptop. Before the plug melted, the laptop refused to charge. It charged when it felt like it, and then randomly stops.

I think my cousin got the laptop last year. He visited Puerto Rico and bought the laptop from there, and came to the US. I guess its an 05 model and maybe these were improved. Of course, he did pay more fore it, considering that stuff in Puerto Rico costs more than the US.

I second the HP issues, but for a different reason. I used to swear by HP, having owned 3 HPs, 3 Compaqs, a Gateway, 2 Toshibas, a Fujitsu, I don't know how many Dells and three IBMs. BUT, I have changed the course on my opinion on HP, I wouldn't get another after buying the Macbook. I had a ZE4230 die and of the nc6200's I have used for work one mobo crap out, and the other had a backlight flicker on and off and the CDRW/DVD die.

To answer the OPs question I would absolutely get a Macbook, in fact I did. I will be handing the Macbook over to the wife, and getting another Macbook or a Macbook Pro as soon as they have "N" wireless to a point where it works for use with iTV when it hit's first quarter of 07. That coupeld with the MAC OS and bundled software iTunes, iMovie, etc and Front Row will be goodness all over. No more native Microsoft after Jan 1 for me.

I would like to warn all PC users that speaking this way of Mac will not get you invited to the unveiling of whatever product they introduce next but doesn't work. Did anyone see that bloopers video? Regardless, my brother is a 'mac person' and it is impossible to make any sense to him. I think the problem is he is incredibly vein and the Mac suits his need to 'fit in'. Essentially, the Mac (any mac) is made for people who want to use a computer but don't want to have to learn how to use a computer. Is it shocking that Pro Atheletes have these things? Or actors? And that's part of the appeal. Mac becomes part of their personna in a way that Sony or Toshiba or IBM ever could. It says 'I paid too much for this machine but that's how I roll. I'm not smart enough to know about computers, and THAT'S cool, but I need to check my take-over bid while sipping on a latte and looking smooth...otherwise the bohemian hottie behind the counter will think I'm a computer geek.'

The funny thing is, nowadays, the Mac is just a PC that looks 'cool' and has a reputation based on iPod's success. You can find an acer that does everything the Mac will do, including getting WAY too hot and changing colors depending on usage, but for literally half the cost. I honestly think that MS can finally touch the same market Mac reaches with VISTA as it caters to their social life instead of just their business life. Isn't that really what the difference is? Mac supposedly makes it 'cool' to compute at starbucks? Where the guy w/ the Lenovo looks stuffy drinking his Extra-Extra-Dark Holiday-blend with no sugar and some battery acid frothed on the top.

The Mac is an expression. People who own them have something to say. The problem is, most of the time, you just don't care what it is cause it's usually about them.

Wow, so that's my kind?

So let's break this down-

Essentially, the Mac (any mac) is made for people who want to use a computer but don't want to have to learn how to use a computer.

Interesting idea here. In no way applies to me, but interesting nonetheless. Adopting an excellent clean simple UI is now akin to knowing nothing about computers, or how to use them.

It says 'I paid too much for this machine but that's how I roll. I'm not smart enough to know about computers, and THAT'S cool, but I need to check my take-over bid while sipping on a latte and looking smooth...otherwise the bohemian hottie behind the counter will think I'm a computer geek

You think $999 is too much for the Macbook? I like how you take your brothers personna and turn it into all Mac users are X. I certainly won't try to use the broken logic you use and defend all Mac users, I can only account for the people I know. We know computers, and make a damn good living in the industry.

The funny thing is, nowadays, the Mac is just a PC that looks 'cool' and has a reputation based on iPod's success. You can find an acer that does everything the Mac will do, including getting WAY too hot and changing colors depending on usage, but for literally half the cost.

First you need a history lesson on the Mac. It's not riding on the iPod, that's for damn sure. Second, that Acer will not Run OSX (legally) or any of the bundled apps that OSX comes with. That's the reason to buy a Mac. The hardware is excellent, the support is excellent, the software is why you buy it.

I honestly think that MS can finally touch the same market Mac reaches with VISTA as it caters to their social life instead of just their business life.

Vista will not reach the same market Mac reaches. Several reasons for this, but I have a feeling that will encite you to argue back and forth when I have no interest. Let's just leave it as time will tell.

It's because people are trained to take the UI Microsoft gives them, all the other associated issues and associate that with how computing should be. By the same logic, the latest Novell Enterprise release should be a kiddie OS as well. How much farther from the truth can that be?

my last dell laptop ran just as hot as my powerbook does, if not hotter. my thinkpad ran just as hot as my powerbook does. i'm sure the aluminum case doesn't help, but it's not like hot laptops just arrived.

oh, speaking of ibm laptops, go check out gizmodo to see the pics of the one that caught on fire. i think it perhaps busts your theory on any ibm laptop having heat issues.

the expression i make these days with my mac is one of relaxation. "i don't have to deal with all those pc problems anymore, my mac just works and i'm so relaxed." personally, i'm happy with that expression. if not for gaming my pc would be gathering dust by now, and posts like this realize how ignorant i once was when i felt somewhat like you do about apple products.

Your Mac IS a PC. I told you that Mac people are very defensive. They can take no tongue-in-cheek and I just heard my invitation to the unveiling of the Super-Expensive Belt Clip for the MacBookPro 19" has been revoked. Sad because I would look SO stylish with my MacBookPro hanging on my belt next to my Sidekick 7 and my iPod. Just last week it was cool to put it in the Super-Expensive sock that I bought 5 different colors of. Maybe I can use them as pillow cases now. My how time flies.

By the way, this is more tongue-in-cheek (mainly for the benefit of my brother - I don't really care how you spend your money, enjoy the hell out of your Mac's), so just put your pistols away. However, you guys DO deliver on queue. I just like rattling this cage from time to time because the result is rather predictable.

Yes because the reaction of a pc fanboy is so much different than the reaction of a Mac fanboy.

Anyways, no one here is being a fanboy. They are just pointing out the flaws in your stupid arguments.

They aren't arguements but I will admit they are stupid. That was sorta the point. But seriously, what color sock do you have for your Mac?

So the point of your posts are to look stupid. Gotcha.

I don't use Macs anymore. And what the hell are these socks you're rambling about?

Yea but IIRC you need a third party utility to to navigate via the OS via keyboard only and even then it's very ineffective. I could use Windows XP for a month with out a mouse, but I'd be sad because then I couldn't game

If you can't navigate the OS Via keyboard only, I'd consider it a kiddie OS.

That's extremely lame. But yes, you can navigate OS X via the keyboard only.

Yea but IIRC you need a third party utility to to navigate via the OS via keyboard only and even then it's very ineffective. I could use Windows XP for a month with out a mouse, but I'd be sad because then I couldn't game

Are you sure? I used navigate just fine with just the keyboard. Navigate the dock, menus, folders, pretty much everything.

I could use xp without a keyboard probably for a really long time. My computer is too slow for any games (Pentium 3 600mhz). Well, I only play neo geo game roms but I have a game controller for that.
