Should I get a Q6600?

I'm building a new PC. Upgrading from a 2.4c. I have it clocked at 2.9ghz on stock cooler right now, temps peak at 54C.
I think I need a quad because I don't want to upgrade for awhile and I encode a lot of video (encode avi/mpeg/etc to ipod and dvd).
It takes me a about 2.5 hours to encode video to DVD. It would be nice to knock that time down.
I'm wondering how much time a Q6600 would shave off of this?
I'm thinking I could really use a q6600 because of all the encoding I do, but is there another processor I should look at that is cheaper?
I don't want to spend more than I need to, but I want the cpu to last a few years before I have to upgrade. My last Comp has not been upgraded in
at least 5 years. I even have a Ti-4200 in it and only 512mb ram.
I stick to my 360 for occasional gaming.

My new PC is going to have a 2600xt, 2gb of ram (crucial ballistix pc6400),
a micro atx case because it will serve some time in my living room hooked to my plasma, and Gigabyte MB. http://www.newegg.com/product/...p?item=N82E16813128053
So right now I just need to decide on the quad core, and find a cooler that will fit in a micro atx case for it.

Thanks in advance

Good luck finding a decent cooler that will fit that case and allow you to overclock.

MicroATX cases are not built for OCing, much less OCing 4 cores!!

The quad is certainly the way to go for encoding though.

BTW, Thermalright Ultima 90 is available now too! heatsinkfactory has them. It might fit your micro atx.

I know some of the coolers will fit because I've seen people fit them in the case I am getting (ultra Bx6) but I guess there will be a lot of heat for that small of a case. I'm just going to try it out and see what temps I get. I really want to be able to take it back and forth between my living room and my study.

Thanks for the replies.

It takes me about 17 minutes to rip a dvd to ISO with titles and everything on my old e6400 dual core 3.2ghz a quad at the same speed could probably do it 2x faster

Sorry, but ripping is highly dependant on the IO, and I can't do much better, My C2D only uses 20% cpu while dvdshink is working, and less for dycrypter.

DVD decrypter is probably not going to utilize a quad

I would probably suggest you ditch the idea for a quad and get an e6750 or e6850... something along the lines of a decent C2D.

It is unlikely you will use a 4 cores at any given time
