Is it true that games you get from games for gold are permanent, while PSN games become unplayable the instant your sub lapses?

I don't think so. Looks like only as long as you have a gold account.

Booted up my Xbone to a your controller needs update message. Once done I was greeted with the new UI. Like the new UI better so far. Controller configuration app is included and looks to be functional. 1st booted my Xbone on Saturday I think it was so wasn't really used to the UI anyways.

I think I've got a few years on ya.

They aren't bad games, don't get me wrong - I just don't have the rabid fascination with 'omg halo' like so many people do. It wasn't revolutionary to me as it seems to have been to the Xbox world - it was just another shooter.

Honestly though the biggest reason I am not buying Microsoft consoles is because of all the crap they pulled during the Xbox One pre-release days.

But but but.. it had the WARTHOG.. and tanks... and ghosts.. and.. yeah, I bought my first xbox solely for Halo even though I started with commander keen and wolfenstein, etc on the pc, and to a lesser extent, rogue and larn on unix.

Yet somehow they are utterly dominating in console sales.

I have so little time to play games these days that a smaller library is largely irrelevant - I'm not remotely caught up on my PC backlog, let alone anything else. Microsoft annoyed me with the big-brother-esque shit they were pulling with the Xbox One before launch; between that and the absurd hardware advantage the PS4 has, I went PS4.

But hey, to each their own

Edit: Being that I've been out of the console world for quite a long time, I did some looking around. From what I saw, the PS4 game lineup was arguably stronger:

link:

Is Halo/GoW the primary advantage you see the Xbox having? I'm legitimately curious, as I'm just dipping my toes into the water here. I'll be lucky if I get through the games that came with my console before the end of the year, let alone anything else!

It's a matter of tastes. But for someone who plays a lot of games (but finishes very few of them), the Xbone just seems to be getting games that interest me. The PS4 suffers in the end because of the controller while worlds better than the PS3 one, I prefer the Xbone one so much that any cross platform game I get, I get on the Xbox (or PC). So for me in actually released games I have one game that I legitimately wanted and now own on the PS4, TLoU remastered. I will eventually get the Drake collection and will pickup Uncharted 4. But other than TLoU a game that I had already purchased on the PS3 that I liked so much to basically upgrade it, I haven't found an interesting game.

To top it off when competing with Xbox exclusives. I prefer Forza over GT, and Forza gets newer games much quicker than GT. 3 Already compared to 1 for GT. Though I think MS needs to stay away from making it a yearly release, I'd rather have that then once a gen. But yeah GoW, Halo (kind of, not big on anyone's SP FPS's, but I'd get Halo over Resistance.) Forza. But it isn't even about the exclusives itself. It's about pacing. The PS4 has been a slow burn and the few AAA exclusives that have come out have been straight up duds. Like 1886 which I hoped was going to be decent but got lambasted which makes me glad I didn't pre-order it.

In the long run the PS4 is going to have a better lineup of complete games. But on the other hand I feel like the franchises we like will have more chapters on the Xbone.

I have the Drake collection - if you want it after I've played them all, I'll swap you for something else.

I also preferred Forza over GT, though I admit I will be tempted when the next GT releases.

Nah I like to keep my games, I still have PS2 games lying around. I just haven't picked up the Drake collection because I had FO4, BlOps3, and TR2 coming in.

If I get FO4 it'll be on PC -- I never did finish 3 though, so I'm not sure if I should bother.

Honestly though the biggest reason I am not buying Microsoft consoles is because of all the crap they pulled during the Xbox One pre-release days.

In fairness, there are people who think those kinds of things about everything. GTA, I think it's a bad game from basically every angle but content quantity.

As for the pre-release stuff, meh. Since then, they've reversed all of that stuff. They've made their console cheaper. They've thrown in free games left, right, and center. They've added backwards compatibility. Meanwhile, Sony (and Nintendo does this as well) mostly takes a "we're above listening to our customers approach," like with how they rejected any chance for backwards compatibility. Given how some of their biggest first-party releases have been remasters (TLoU, Uncharted), I can't say I blame them.

The other thing about the One is it seems to spread itself out more with true exclusives. The PS4 looks like it's going through the holiday season with a bunch of DLC/marketing deals with Battlefront, Black Ops, Destiny, and so on. Opposing that, Microsoft actually handled the majority of the publishing work for Tomb Raider (at least, that's how it seems), and they're pushing out actual games from their two biggest franchises, Halo and Forza.

I was as irritated as anyone about the E3 2013 B.S. I'm still a bit miffed they forced folks to waste $100 on a Kinect whose support didn't even make it 2 years (they haven't released a meaningful game in almost 18 months, and the new UI took out Kinect gesture integration). However, they've since given the head of the division the boot and done a LOT of really good stuff.

The world of console exclusive games kind of sucks.

Recently bought a Ps4 as too me it's the better option than Xbone. Got some games I want to play that are only available on Ps4 so I'm happy with it.

Wound up selling my old gaming rig and GTX 970 on craiglist to cover the cost with enough left over to buy a Xbone if wanted.

Got the itch to play Tomb Raider so picked up the Xbone Tomb Raider bundle at Best Buy on launch that included a free $50 gift card at the time. They had promo starting the following Friday which also included a free game of choice. When I took my receipt back to claim the game they didn't have any issue doing it. Manager just told the lady to return the console, add it back, add the game which zeros out. The system automatically generated another $50 gift card, manager said most likely it'll just zero out the 1st one anyways. Walked out with Black Ops III and a $50 gift card. Checked next day both cards showed $50. Got a liveable deal on the Xbone. $399-$50-$50=$299. Sold Black Ops to son for $40 so I'm down to $259 for a 1tb console. If I deduct current digital download value of $59 for Tomb Raider and reward $'s I'm in it for less than $200 in the end.

Game/Gold sharing with my son sweetens the deal. Nice of Microsoft to allow such a thing.

Used both gift cards towards the Elite controller which is back ordered. Figure might as well see if it works for me. My son said he'll buy it off me if I don't like it anyways so figure I can't lose anyways. Probably could make a profit on it depending on supply vs demand if he changes his mind.

My current 4790k,16GB, 1TB SSD rig is sporting integrated graphics on web, email duty. Figure it's just a gpu away from being a gaming rig again. Probably hold off till the next launch and take a look at the offerings.

I'm older so I kind of prefer the couch potato gaming style of the console world anyways.

Just got to wait it out for some Black Friday deals on games now.

Yeah, I upgraded from my 500-GB Xbox One to the Halo 5 version during that sale. I spent about $200, and I got the Halo 5 console ($500), Black Ops 3 (traded it in for $44 towards Fallout), a $50 gift card, a second Locke controller ($70), and a free Halo 5 REQ pack ($25). Might look into selling the REQ pack and the Halo 5 armor DLC and get a bit more money back. Microsoft and Best Buy are killing it with deals.

There are a few games I'll keep an eye out for on Black Friday, since they're looking at some decent prices. Rare Replay is almost a must. Gears Ultimatemight interest me, unsure yet. Forza could be a re-buy. Super-cheap Dying Light and Sunset Overdrive could get re-added to the library, though I'm leaning towards hoping for DLC-inclusive bundles on those games.

You kept games permanently on 360. On the One, you have to keep your sub going. The interesting split on that will be with BC. Since 360 games are permanently kept, but One games require the sub to be active, IDK what the One will do with emulation of 360 GWG titles.

Which of these should I choose for a seven and five year old? It would be used for Disney Infinity or Skylanders games. Perhaps a driving/racing game if there are any aimed at younger kids.

Honestly, a Wii U would be much better for kids like that. It has Infinity 3.0 and Superchargers (with special Bowser and Donkey Kong amiibo), and you'd get the best of the best from an arcade, kid-friendly racing standpoint--Mario Kart 8. The exclusives these consoles push aren't exactly aimed at kids, instead mostly focusing on mature audiences. An example there is Sunset Overdrive, which is a bright, colorful game that LOOKS like it might be for kids, until you get to the content and language of it.

Really, the Wii U will meet your needs and offer WAY more than enough to entertain a couple of young kids who probably aren't looking to jump on Xbox LIVE or PSN to play Call of Duty. Get them the toys-to-life games. Get them Mario Kart. Get the Yoshi's Woolly World (it's awesome). Maybe get Splatoon and Smash and the other Nintendo platformers (3D World, Kirby, Donkey Kong). I've got a little brother going on 10. They have the Xbox One and the 360, yet he's wanting the Wii U for Christmas.

Wouldn't Skylanders or Infinity look better on the PS4 or Xbox One? I feel like I am getting ripped off paying the same price for Wii U versions of the games.

How does this work? The system check online and verify you have gold or the downloaded games get grayed out or something? If you haul your Xbone to a friends to play a two player game is it locked out for having an internet connection hooked up?

Honestly, probably not. The Wii U does 1080p, and I'm guessing those games aren't taxing any hardware much, if at all.

I honestly don't know. My LIVE's not lapsed in 12.5 years. My guess would be four possible moves:

1. They require GWG titles to be played online at all times.
2. You can hide offline to keep access after Gold lapses.
3. They require an online check-in every so often (like the One's initial 24-hour requirement).
4. They have an offline sub date expiration timer attached to your account to tell it when to stop giving you access, if it can't verify that your sub was renewed.

This is true on Xbox 360. This is not true on Xbox One - GwG on Xbox One works the same as PS+ games.

EDIT: Oops, late to the party.

My first thought is a Wii U.

I actually have quite a bit of experience with the question on what gaming console is best for younger kids.... I personally own pretty much every game device, with the exception of the Xbox One. PS4, PS3, Vita, 3DS, Wii U, Gaming PC, smartphones/tablets, and so on. And, I have an 8 year old daughter, who I share a lot of these devices with (she has her own 3DS and 7inch tablet).

Nintendo has some good first party games on the Wii U for kids. Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, Mario Maker, Mario 3D World, and Hyrule Warriors, were all fun games my daughter and I played together. Big publisher 3rd party games like Lego and Skylanders are still ported to the Wii U, as well as most kid friendly indie games, like Trine 2.

So it's a no-brainer, right? Well, actually, the Wii U is played significantly LESS by my daughter than the PS4.

The PS4, right off the bat, has a huge advantage in that it has Minecraft and Terraria. The Wii U currently only has some Minecraft knock-off called "Cube Life". The Wii U is getting Terraria in April 2016. A lot of games will take much longer to arrive on the Wii U, if they do at all. While on the subject of "builder" type games, which kids love, Playstation is going to have "Dragon Quest Builders" and "The Tomorrow Children" as exclusives. I personally think that 'Dragon Quest Builders' might turn out to be something my daughter will like A LOT. Being the best console for indie games the PS4 has quite a few kid friendly indie exclusives. Broken Age is on PC, but not Wii U or Xbox One, for one example, Doki Doki Universe is a playstation exclusive. We had some fun with Towerfall, and my daughter really liked Journey. Sony makes the occasional first party exclusive for kids too, with Tearaway Unfolded, Knack (not a fan but some like it), and Little Big Planet, as examples. I didn't see anything inappropriate for kids in Gravity Rush, and my daughter enjoyed it on the Vita (I had to help with quite a few boss fights, however)... When she found out it was coming to the PS4, she seemed pretty happy about it.
- Cross platform games are generally much cheaper on PS4 vs Wii U, and usually look and play better.

For kids games, I don't think we miss out on much by not having an Xbox One. The only significant exclusive over on that platform that I'm aware of is 'Ori and the Blind Forest'. I'm not really wanting my 8 year old daughter to play stuff like 'Sunset Overdrive', you know?

TLDR: I think the PS4 is actually the best console for kids above the Wii U, and Xbox One.

I'd consider the U if they actually cut the price of the damn thing. Even if it meant just shipping the standard controller without the tablet. $200 is doable to get Bayonetta 2 and Smash Bros. $250 is pushing it when I can get a PS4 with a game for $299 or less on black friday.
