I think I've got a few years on ya.
They aren't bad games, don't get me wrong - I just don't have the rabid fascination with 'omg halo' like so many people do. It wasn't revolutionary to me as it seems to have been to the Xbox world - it was just another shooter.
Honestly though the biggest reason I am not buying Microsoft consoles is because of all the crap they pulled during the Xbox One pre-release days.
In fairness, there are people who think those kinds of things about everything.
GTA, I think it's a bad game from basically every angle but content quantity.
As for the pre-release stuff, meh. Since then, they've reversed all of that stuff. They've made their console cheaper. They've thrown in free games left, right, and center. They've added backwards compatibility. Meanwhile, Sony (and Nintendo does this as well) mostly takes a "we're above listening to our customers approach," like with how they rejected any chance for backwards compatibility. Given how some of their biggest first-party releases have been remasters (
TLoU,
Uncharted), I can't say I blame them.
The other thing about the One is it seems to spread itself out more with true exclusives. The PS4 looks like it's going through the holiday season with a bunch of DLC/marketing deals with
Battlefront,
Black Ops,
Destiny, and so on. Opposing that, Microsoft actually handled the majority of the publishing work for
Tomb Raider (at least, that's how it seems), and they're pushing out actual games from their two biggest franchises,
Halo and
Forza.
I was as irritated as anyone about the E3 2013 B.S. I'm still a bit miffed they forced folks to waste $100 on a Kinect whose support didn't even make it 2 years (they haven't released a meaningful game in almost 18 months, and the new UI took out Kinect gesture integration). However, they've since given the head of the division the boot and done a LOT of really good stuff.
The world of console exclusive games kind of sucks.
Recently bought a Ps4 as too me it's the better option than Xbone. Got some games I want to play that are only available on Ps4 so I'm happy with it.
Wound up selling my old gaming rig and GTX 970 on craiglist to cover the cost with enough left over to buy a Xbone if wanted.
Got the itch to play Tomb Raider so picked up the Xbone Tomb Raider bundle at Best Buy on launch that included a free $50 gift card at the time. They had promo starting the following Friday which also included a free game of choice. When I took my receipt back to claim the game they didn't have any issue doing it. Manager just told the lady to return the console, add it back, add the game which zeros out. The system automatically generated another $50 gift card, manager said most likely it'll just zero out the 1st one anyways. Walked out with Black Ops III and a $50 gift card. Checked next day both cards showed $50. Got a liveable deal on the Xbone. $399-$50-$50=$299. Sold Black Ops to son for $40 so I'm down to $259 for a 1tb console. If I deduct current digital download value of $59 for Tomb Raider and reward $'s I'm in it for less than $200 in the end.
Game/Gold sharing with my son sweetens the deal. Nice of Microsoft to allow such a thing.
Used both gift cards towards the Elite controller which is back ordered. Figure might as well see if it works for me. My son said he'll buy it off me if I don't like it anyways so figure I can't lose anyways. Probably could make a profit on it depending on supply vs demand if he changes his mind.
My current 4790k,16GB, 1TB SSD rig is sporting integrated graphics on web, email duty. Figure it's just a gpu away from being a gaming rig again. Probably hold off till the next launch and take a look at the offerings.
I'm older so I kind of prefer the couch potato gaming style of the console world anyways.
Just got to wait it out for some Black Friday deals on games now.
Yeah, I upgraded from my 500-GB Xbox One to the
Halo 5 version during that sale. I spent about $200, and I got the
Halo 5 console ($500),
Black Ops 3 (traded it in for $44 towards
Fallout), a $50 gift card, a second Locke controller ($70), and a free
Halo 5 REQ pack ($25). Might look into selling the REQ pack and the
Halo 5 armor DLC and get a bit more money back. Microsoft and Best Buy are killing it with deals.
There are a few games I'll keep an eye out for on Black Friday, since they're looking at some decent prices.
Rare Replay is almost a must.
Gears Ultimatemight interest me, unsure yet.
Forza could be a re-buy. Super-cheap
Dying Light and
Sunset Overdrive could get re-added to the library, though I'm leaning towards hoping for DLC-inclusive bundles on those games.
Is it true that games you get from games for gold are permanent, while PSN games become unplayable the instant your sub lapses?
You kept games permanently on 360. On the One, you have to keep your sub going. The interesting split on that will be with BC. Since 360 games are permanently kept, but One games require the sub to be active, IDK what the One will do with emulation of 360 GWG titles.
