One of my close friends works for Microsoft and was able to get two free copies of Windows 7. He offered one to me for $20. Worst comes to worst I will never use it and it will gather dust on my shelve. Already use Vista 64 bit so not sure if it really is worth the time or trouble. Sure it is cheap but I don't really feel like redoing my whole OS again right now.

I don't feel like going through the trouble of selling it. Sorry to lazy. I would say sure if I got someone else to do it but that would be hardly worth it at all.

Guess I will get it so I can use it if the time ever comes for a upgrade or I feel like redoing my system. Still not sure though.

I've lost 20 bucks more times than I can count. I wouldn't even think twice about picking a copy of 7 up for 20 bucks. You can always just save it for a rainy day.

Seriously though, it's not that hard to do an upgrade. You'd also be able to do an in place upgrade which is even easier.

I don't do upgrades only fresh installs of new Operating Systems. To many things can go wrong with upgrading a OS.

Just learned all my windows movie maker files that I created on Windows Vista 64 bit will not work on Windows 7 64 bit at all. Now that sucks. To bad there is no way to convert the .MSWMM file to support Windows 7 64 bit or be able to install the Windows Vista movie maker in windows 7. I don't understand why Microsoft got rid of the awesome movie maker in Windows Vista.

All joking aside...

I've always thought that Windows (any version) should sell for $29.99 so $20 would be 33% off MSRP in a sane world.

Your call, but I'd try to get him down to $10.

I was surprised when Microsoft didn't include Movie Maker in the 7 - figured it was because I was running a beta release, but...

I read (later) that there are several apps missing in 7. Can't remember which ones, but I guess the idea is to force ppl into cloud computing.

Evidently Microsoft thinks that's the way of the future...

i am quickly becoming a fanboy of 7. i hated vista installed it twice and never kept it more than 3 days. ridiculous idles and whatnot. the only qualm i have with 7 is all the hoops to network it to my xp media machine. I can play all my games that i have installed so far (only 4 but installing more today) it runs smoothly and with avg runnning a scan at the moment thunderbird on my second monitor, Yahoo messenger and its running a smooth 1.22 gigs ram at an average 30 percent cpu. that is about what vista idled my machine at after a clean full install. 15 minuter install on 7 with all drivers automatically installed. YES! THANK YOU!! I couldn't believe it. I have NEVER had an install that automatically found and installed working drivers. Thought i would have more issues running 64 but not yet. As long as you don't want to use IE 64 bit (problem installing adobe flash if i remember right) its great.
and if you do decide to sell that copy i know i am interested in the bidding...

I upgraded from Vista x64 to Win 7 x64 on my laptop and there's no looking back. I was so impressed how everything transferred perfectly from vista to windows.

Hopefully i wont be eating my words in a few months. :-s

What's the big deal ? Couldn't you EASILY just sell the key online? Thats a steal and there's probably zillions who would spend 40,50,60 for it!

Now..you're rather sit on a copy of W7 you will never use instead of making a good, quick buck online? <---

The OP used more energy in this thread then it would have taken to buy it and sell it online.

PS: Acronis + upgrade = safety net

Just email me the key.

I was simply stating it was an option. I wouldn't do an in place upgrade either but it's worked well for a lot of people going from Vista to 7. I've enjoyed working with Vista and I've really enjoyed the time I've spent tinkering with 7 in a VM. I think it's worth the hassle and will be moving to 7 in October without hesitation.

Don't mean to pick on your reply, but...

I think some of you are missing the point.

The 20 bucks is a no-brainer, but he's afraid:
  1. 1) It will tempt him to give up on his Vista install, which he's perfectly happy with.
    2) Or, sit on the shelf, gathering dust, and make him feel bad that he's not using it.
At least that's the way I'm reading it...

Personally, I'd leave my Vista install alone and dual-boot 7.

For instance, I'm on my netty right now, using Linux Mint 7, but I have Microsoft XP on tap in another partition, in case I'm feeling whimsical.

I also have a lappy that's multi-booted with Linux Mint 7 / Vista HP / OpenSolaris.

Then, I have a gaggle of servers and workstations with everything from Windows 98 SE to 64-bit Ubuntu installed - some multi-booted, some not.

It's NOT a zero sum gain to me. There's no reason the OP couldn't leave his Vista install in place, dual-boot 7 and play around with it when the mood strikes. It doesn't have to be one-or-the-other, you know?

Vista to Windows 7 upgrades are usually painless. It tells you what things might not work before you upgrade (either that don't work at all or won't transfer).

Honestly, though...It's probably worth the reinstall. Besides, I can be up and running with a clean install in two days or less. No big deal.
