I'm planning on buying an Atom based computer or perhaps assemble a rig myself. It will be primarily for web surfing and photo editing. My budget is around $200 so I'm looking for the best parts I can get within the budget. My concern primarily is which processor to get, AMD or Intel? Who's winning the best-bang-for-the-buck war currently?

You better live next to Fry's.

If you live near Fry's, they might have a Celeron E3300 BIOSTAR G41-M7 for 29 after M/R.

What are you planning on using this computer for? Is this going to be a main machine, or 2nd machine?

I didn't vote but if you want to have AMD around Ya better buy AMD cpus ya I know it means you will only have a lowend PC but AMD NEEDS YOU . JOIN the Fight.

Please list your computer.

I'm guessing a 965 or hexcore AMD is a better rig than whatever you can't afford from Intel.

There's nothing wrong with AMD. If I didn't have the rig I have already, I would not build anything from Intel. I paid $365 for my CPU on launch day in OEM form, and there's nothing to brag about overspending when AMD has just as high quality hardware available. I wouldn't do it today.

Webs surfing and photo editing? You don't even need a new computer for that! Just go to Craigslist and get a used computer. If you're even contemplating an Atom-based computer, you owe it to yourself to look at used computers because those will likely still be faster. You can easily get one for nearly $50, and the rest of the money you can use for blackjack and hookers.

Maybe not the correct thread, but I'll sell you an Intel e6600, 2GB, WD 500GB, nVidia 8800GT box for $200; you pay transport, unless you live within ~60 miles from San Francisco. Clock is about 3.2GHz, with a Vista 64 license and a 1st-Gen Blu-Ray reader (SATA, but not writer). ATX mobo, shitty Coolermaster black Mid-Tower & combo PSU.

EDIT: $150 - this will be a killer machine compared to the P4/Athlon XP you buy from someone's garage.

No, watt per watt Intel is faster. But dollar per dollar, AMD is better.

AMD is only better dollar for dollar, if you don't factor in time (spent waiting for the slower AMD to get the workload done).
My time isn't free...is yours?

Both ~$50.
You win some, you lose some (gaming benchmarks are irrelevant).
Sometimes the AMD CPU gets things done faster, sometimes the equally priced Intel CPU gets things done faster.
So where am I wasting my time waiting?

^ awesome deal IMO. Can't beat that for $150. Just built my grandmother a new 955BE/890GX rig and the keyboard alone was $100 (mechanical switch KB http://www.frys.com/product/5980374?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG).

Can't buy much for $100 anymore.

I'll wait a week for the OP, and then it's up for grabs... not a bad upgrade from a single core IMO... $150 North SF Bay.

+1. That's insane for $150. I vaguely recall when those specs would have set you back near 1k.
