msi geforce 4mx 440 64mb 8x agp
samsung 550s 15" monitor
windows xp professional

my video card says it supports directX 8.1 and i'm using directX 8.1. I don't play any games that reqiuires directX 9. though if i install directX 9, will it boost the system perfomance?

That's what I wanna know. I have the 8500, and 8.1 still with the 2.5cats, and I don't have problems now. I'm sticking with the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" saying. I might try out the 3.1cats, but hate to have to uninstall, re-install, regedit....blah blah blah. I dunno about DX9, no games use it anyway, yet...

DX9.1 should be out soon.

I installed DX9 when I did a new install of Win2K (and SP3 - I like "living dangerously") this week . . . no problems with the 3.0 Cats (Radeon 8500) and am playing Unreal II with no probs. (Win98SE is now finally "bye-bye" for my desktop)

Also, if you wanna run 3DMArk2003, you're gonna need DX9.

Not gonna risk it. I'm still on CAt2.5 and DirectX8.1

No "issues" yet . . . and "nothing" that DX 9.1 (probably) won't fix.

I said in an earlier thread that I wouldn't install DX9 until I "had" to . . . however, I throw out my own "rules" when I am doing a 'clean install' of a new O/S . . . I finally "dumped" Win98SE off my HD (forever - I've only had 2K on my laptop for 15 months . . . long enough for an "evaluation", I guess).

I installed my Radeon 9500 pro last night with the 3.1 Catalyst drivers and everything seems to be running fine. Should I install DX9? I guess my thought is, if it ain't broke don't fix it...

I also have the 8500, and just reinstalled my computer - so I figured I'd try DirectX 9 and the newest cats (3.2? 3.1?) and it works great.
But in order to get it working, you have to uninstall all the old ATI drivers, and that is difficult.

When should you update to the next directx release?

1. there are drivers for your card for that directx release
2. there are patches for the games you play for that directx release
3. you make damn sure that there are no bad bugs that exist

I am running a P4 with an 8500DV and an Athlon 1.33TB with a Radeon 32MB DDR, and I have DX9 installed on both (both have Win XP SP1 installed), with no problems. I also had Cat 3.0's installed, and just upgraded to the Cat 3.1's with no problems. My benchmarks have gone up slightly, but nothing to write home about. I have seen absolutely NO stability issues with either system. In fact, I would say this setup is the most stable I've ever had.

Probably not until you get a DX9 card, however you`ll have to install DX9 sooner or later,I decided to do it sooner with my GF2 Ti card and so far no problems with any games I play,I always look at stability first .

There aren't any new games out yet that run on DX9 so you won't need too. Unless you want to run the ATI 9700 demos and 3dmark2003. I would do it for the heck of it cuz the 9500/9700 are DX9 cards anyway....

I'll add another 'NO' to your replies.

I'm about to re-image back to Cat 2.5 v6218 DX8.1 (again)

I applied each of the Cat 3.#'s, and the performance for Dx8.1 apps dropped.

Stick to the Cat 2.5 6218. There are no games using Dx9 yet anyway.

I just wanted to seethe 3dMark03 benchie.... and it was a dissapointment too.

I say go for it!

I have a GeForce4 Ti 4200 with 41.09 drivers and DX9 and it runs smooth.

Textures seem to run smoother and I got an additional 200 points on 3DMark2001SE! BTW, 3DMark2003 stinks...

On a non gaming note. Direct X9 fixes a lot a bugs that were present in DirectShow. So programmers like program with dx9, there is already a dx9 only media player. Media programers recommend dx9 and eventually alot of media players will require dx 9.

RSMemphis are the ATI Cats. drivers really that hard to uninstall? Curious. I mean when you uninstall nvidia drivers there is other stuff you should delete too i know. Well its best to to make sure it does not cause any problems. Like stuff left in the registry, etc. Neither Nvidia's or ATI's uninstall for their drivers is perfect thats for sure. Both leave some stuff behind. Someone here posted i believe a really good uninstall method on nvidia and ati drivers. If you want the url i will get it for you.

I wouldn't bother if I were you, especially in light of your video card. I have a 9700 Pro and even I don't bother installing DirectX 9.0, at least not as long as DirectX 8.2 continues to work perfectly with ATi's newest drivers.
