I want to upgrade my hardrive as I am going to be purhcasing the new Sandybridge i5-2500k. I am currently running a 250gb hard drive and saw this for sale....

Western Digital WD20EARS Caviar Green 2TB SATA2 3GBPS 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM

for the low low price of 80.00 Canadian.

I am pretty sure that is a good deal but I am also being offered a OCZ Vertex 2 60GB SSD for 80.00 Canadian.

My question is are these two item a good price for my new build? Also I am not very familiar with SSD but my understanding is that I install the operating system to the SSD and run everything else off my 2TB hard drive... it should improve the overall speed of my computer. Am i correct in this assumption?

Good deal on the HDD, great deal on the SSD. Personally my next 2TB purchase(s) will be the Samsung F4, however I do own 2 EARS and an EADS and have no issues with them in my file server.

There's a number of ways to split things between the SSD and the HDD depending on what you need or how much space you use for "things"

I already converted my laptop which is a totally different situation, but when I push the go button on my desktop here's what I plan:

I already have my OS (win7x64) on C: (40GB, 22 free) and moved the Users folder to D: (remainder of my 500GB HDD) via NTFS junctions. C: contains Windows install, and all software except games. D: is all my data and my games.

When I go with the SSD I'm torn between keeping the Users folder in it's own partition, but both Windows and my data are going on the SSD since my "bulk" data is already on my file server and the rest is only a few GB. Games and everything else I normally throw to D: will go on the HDD.

As far as HDDs are concerned you can keep them on Sata 1 and never notice. It's a marketing gimmick for nitwits. SSDs are only just breaching Sata 2 limits. The 7200rpm black might bench faster, but you'll never notice. It's not much of a difference. Especially if you're not exceeding 1TB, you'll get the fastest part of the 2TB drive and "short stroke" it via your usage patterns.

lol ok thank you.... I think I'm going to get the 2tb WD and the OCZ SSD. Should I wait for my new board and sandybridge processor to use these or can I just use them on my existing computer?

Also when i plug the SSD in for the first time do i have to reinstall my OS on it or can I move it from my HDD some how?

Thanks again and sorry about the newbie questions. I haven't built a right in about 3 years now.

You could move it, but most recommend making it nice and fresh with a new install. There's no reason not to use it on your old hardware. You'll get a better idea of how much speed you're getting from the SSD upgrade vs. the faster proc. Means more installs so maybe you don't care to do it that way.

Might as well try it out on your old hardware. You can use the Western Digital edition of Acronis (free from the Western Digital website) to migrate your old hardware over to the new one. That would be the quickest way to get up and going with the new SSD. Probably best to new a fresh OS onstall when you get the new hardware.

Go for the gusto dude, you'll never go back. If set up properly, boot time will amaze you.

If you are going to use it for storage and not load games or frequent access to it, its fine.

But -

Did not notice anyone mention this but the WD Green Drives run at 5400 RPM so keep that in mind.
Same thing with the 2tb Seagate that Jeremy_Tos mentioned. its runs at 5900rpm so it is as slower drive.

Thanks everyone for the imput!

Im using the 2TB as a music/video/pictures drive and the SSD is booting my operating system/playing WOW. I have a 250GB drive which is being used to install programs. So I ended up buying the WD 2TB and the OCZ Vertex. Someone tried to talk me into getting a Kingston 120gb for the same price, but I decided I would rather have the 60gb quality SSD as opposed to the 120GB kingston which i've heard bad things about.

Thanks again to everyone who helped me make this decision!
