Im getting my stepup 512 card tomorrow which I payed $250 for the stepup from my 7800gt.
I had been in the queue for some time now. I figured I could sell it for $800 on ebay then turn around and get the 1900xtx for $600 and also making the $250 back I payed for the step up. Pretty much getting a newer fast card for practically nothing. But now I dont know if I want to do that since Ive never owned an ati card and been hearing about driver issues with the ati.
Would like some advice. Thanks.

Thats a great deal, getting the fastest card around for nothing is always a great deal but you could wait for the 7900GTX in a couple of weeks (according to rumors) and you may be able to do the same thing but the 7900GTX will probably devalue the 7800GTX 512MB so thats a little riskier.

If you can sell the gtx512 for more money than it cost you, then do it while you still can.

And if you are worried about ATI's 1 year warranty deal, Power Color (I think) has lifetime warranty =).

I sold my stepup for an X1900XT. Sold fast on ebay for a Buy-It-Now for $720. I might have (probably?) got more, but I figured I was already doing okay by selling it for more than the card I was replacing it with. I made my decision by looking at the benchmarks of the games I was planning on playing the most (and the resolution/settings I wanted to play them at) in the next few months. Those games were either a virtual tie, or the X1900XT came out ahead by quite a bit.

Get that card on Ebay ASAP, before Nvidia makes an official statement on the 7900. I'd put the buy it now price at something ridiculous like $1200 because you might get lucky with the feeding frenzy this card can sometimes generate.

If it was me, I'd pocket the $800+, maybe get a refurbed 6800GS refurbed as a temp card and wait for the 7900 to compare and for price drops. You should be able to turn around and Ebay a 6800GS for close to the current buy price now.

Whatever you do though, get that 7800 sold now while the auction price is so far over MSPR because very soon it will drop like a rock. Don't unbox the card, sell it as new in the box, 'straight from the factory', never opened, as some buyers might be wary of a used card and might suspect it is one that is defective or a bad OCer.

Personally I would keep it. Everyone says it is one great, silent card. Also saves all the potential crap that can happen on ebay. If you were buying a card from scratch - than there are in my opinion better deals - but step up is not bad.

Rollo claims you can sell the 512 GTX for a profit so you might as well test his theory. Put it up on ebay and see if you can get $750+ for it and then use that cash and get yourself the better card (X1900 XTX).

Try to sell it at around 750~ or higher. If you manage to do so, you might just have enough cash to grab X1900XT CF or even G71 SLi.

There's G71 SLI on the market?

Well, its going to be released soon enough (early march). IF he is willing to get a setup like this, why not just wait for what the competition has too offer.

If you can get it for $750+ you can get yourself a X1900XT for roughly $500. With the extra $250 you can hedge that against the 7900GTX kicking the snot out of the X1900XT in a few weeks. If it's not much of an upgrade over the X1900XT, just splurge the money on yourself and get yourself something nice.

Yeah, I kind of hate dealing with ebay nowadays but was still thinking about selling it and waiting for the g71.
I wish there was some more solid info on how much more performance boost it'll have over the xtx though.
Kind of sucks waiting till next month with no gaming. Im just using a notebook now.

Im thinking about this xtx if I decide to get one. Today is the last day for the rebate though

Honestly, I would say the difference is negligable... I would not want to have the hassle of selling a card just to buy another one that offers about a 10% performance advantage. Don't get me wrong, everyone knows I prefer the X1900XTX, but it doesn't mean that is what I would recomend in every situation.

I am the type of person that doesn't like to hassle with selling, etc... Then I have to worry about shipping and then worry that the person who bought it isn't a dumb ass or defaults on me :-/... Ya know? Personally, I would just keep the GTX 512 and it is a very respectable card.

This is true. I didn't come out too far ahead, but I still came out ahead. After all fees were paid, I probably made about $80. Still not bad considering the card is just as fast as/faster than what I upgraded from.

I'm not sure that you'll be able to sell it for much more than $750 now that the availability has improved.

Yeah, one sold for $860 about a week ago but 2 that I was keeping an eye on ended last night for only $750. So then take into account ebay+paypal fees.

It may be hard to get more than $750 since I have seen many retailers have them instock lately. I know nVIDIA is really pushing to get all the $750 backorders filled before they release their next card.

Either that or demand for them dropped off sharply with the R580 release.
