Should I Kill Myself...(Read: Motherboard Fried Again)

Okay, here's the skinny. I was just logging on to b.net to play a little Diablo II, and what happens...machine appears to go into a spontaneous reboot, but oh no...video never comes back. I continue rebooting, and rebooting, and nada. My MSI Diag lights all read RED! (ps...this is an MSK k7t pro2a). The big thing is...the exact same thing happend to me last summer when I was refreshing Counterstrike servers. Do I have a problem bigger than another bad motherboard here...like a bad PS or something, and if so, how do I test it. This is really starting to get on my nerves!

Okay...after more trying, it booted up...strange! Only my CPU fan is making a really wierd noise, kinda like when you have a playing card in you're bike spokes, like it's hitting something. I went into the bios, and sure-'nuff, it was registering no RPM for the CPU...and the temp was going up about 2 degrees F every couple of seconds. I quickly shut it off as to not burn the chip. Should I just buy a new HSF? I'll try to get my ass to Best Buy tomorrow.

Hehe...funny. Now that I'm thinking about it though...and follow me here, would it be possible for the system to overheat (due to the fan going bad) and reboot, but not POST? Because if that is the case, then it makes sense that it came back on after 30 min or so, after it had time to cool down.

Just wondering...is it possible?

check your cpu fan. It might have lost a blade.

Ok... the same thing happened to my K7T Pro2a a few months ago... playing Diablo 2 (what a coincidence!) an then the system reboots/locks hard. I power it back on and notice a whirling sound... no system boot... I run fanless... still a whirling sound... so the sound is coming from CPU socket (something is fried). What I did was just buy a new MB (K7S5A) cuz that damn Pro2a was the most unstable board I have ever bought. Now my Duron 700 even runs at 933 on my new MB... I believe K7S5A goes for around $55 US. Trust me the Pro2a (although gets good reviews) is just a troublesome board to deal with! Rant / OFF

I've had a very similar experience to SleepyGuy's I had RMAed a K7T pro2 for my bro(it died mysteriously so I replaced it with my KT7 for him) and though it took quite awhile, they sent me a K7T pro2A. I was stoked because it was new not refurbed with the ATA100, cables, CD, ect... I set it up with a Duron700 and it wouldn't O/C. so I Tried different BIOS versions but no go! Anyways, to make a long story short, it died within 3weeks :frown: I just recieved another K7S5A from Mwave(Newegg was out at the time) and I like it better than my 1st K7S5A(it's in a clients workstation now) It has the rectanguar bios chip, more boot device options( 1st was bought in August and I flashed it only once to August bios) and seems to boot up faster than the 1st

Can we splitup your gear ?? .Cooling is a Priority...hehe....my cuz called yesterday ...BSODs, random page faults, reboots from hell(nogo past BIOS :Q ), etc. Traced back to ...... CPUFan and not enough Airflow ...The Comp was being shortchanged by being right up against the wall(even the cables were warm due to the PSU fan and exhaust 80mm fan being stuffed

) she sees now the error of that placement.

Anyway, I'm gonna go out and buy a HSF and some Thermal Grease in the next couple of hours. I'll update you guys on the situation after that, thx again!
